So I don’t have an SO who is a teacher, but my 5 bff’s are all teachers and 3 of their SO’s are teachers as well. What’s funny abou this to me is the one’s where they are both teachers, they do not get summer jobs, however the other 2 are expected to get summer jobs, and their wives are not teachers. I wonder if not being a teacher makes you somehow feel like the other person should be working too.

My boyfriend is a teacher and he is lucky to work for the school teaching a summer rec program for the students (it’s hourly pay added to his existing yearly salary). It doesn’t take up the whole time, but he only has a 6-week summer break due to working at a “year-round” school. If he didn’t teach the rec program, I don’t think he’d have time to get a summer job, as 6 weeks is too short.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable.  Darling Husband is in ultrasound and he works any call they give him and will do so until we have kids and buy a house.  But that’s something he just feels and not something I’ve asked for.  So I think your FI has to make the choice.  Is there something similar to his field that he could do?  It’s hard to have a career and then make minimum wage I would think.  If there was something in his field then he could see it as more worthwhile.

My Fiance is not a teacher, but I am. Although I am still getting my monthly paycheck, I am also tutoring over the summer. Just 4 days a week for 2 hours. It brings in some extra money, I feel like I am still getting a summer, and the scheduling is on my terms! My Fiance seems to be happy with this set up as well. Maybe you could approach him about doing something like that?

My FH isn’t a teacher, but I am a teacher myself. Speaking as someone who’s really involved in extracurriculars with my students, I personally feel like I need the summer to recuperate. I work double the amount of time that most people do during the year, so it only seems fair that I get a little bit of a breather as long as FH and I can afford it. 🙂

That said, if I needed to get a summer job because we needed the $$, I totally would. I have teacher friends who teach some summer school classes and get a couple thousand dollars.

If he’s not involved in coaching or running a club/organization, you may want to encourage him to do so during the school year if he really doesn’t want to work during the summers because you do get paid for most of these things.

@MrsCoachBtoBee: Have you sat down and talked with him about it? Honestly, if FH sat down and talked about it with me, I would go and get a job. The only reason I don’t is because he is okay with it and financially we’re doing all right. But if you feel like the two of you could really use the money, I think this is a very fair conversation to have.

And wow, I feel dumb now that I asked you if he coaches after looking at your name more closely. 😉

@MrsCoachBtoBee: I would just reiterate to him that next summer it’s really a necessity if y’all need the money. Not really too much you can do at this point if he hasn’t found any opportunities. Good luck!!
