BR Guest group has a great private event space that was formerly a restaurant called Fiamma. It’s called 206 Sprint St now, (the address), not sure of your budget, but when i was considering having my Rehearsal Dinner there, I remember it being very reasonable.  Might be worth checking out.

Are you looking for just an event space for cocktails?  Or something more formal with food/sit down dinner?  Definitely check out restaurants for buyout options if you want dinner included. I planned a rehearsal dinner at Public down on Elizabeth St in Nolita.  It’s an awesome restaurant, chic decor and very NY feel.  They have a lot of options for different size events (15 to 70) and the staff was easy to work with.

Another downtown venue worth checking out is The Stanton Social on the LES.  I went to an engagement party there last year.  They have a restaurant downstairs and a private event space upstairs.  The party was more reception-style but there were lounge spaces and banquettes with plenty of tapas served:

These are definitely not the cheapest options available in NYC for a party, but gives you an idea of what’s available in terms of lounge/restaurant spaces.  Good luck!  (and Welcome to NYC!)

@Ms. Starla: Hey we have that in common! I am moving from Canada to be with my Fiance in NYC. We went Le Souk recently which was nice. It is a trendy lounge/restaurant. Also try Budakan is very good for a party!

We had ours at Blue Smoke – their upper seating area fits 34 people.  Not cheap, but reasonable considering the amount of food!!!

Also look into Bubby’s in DUMBO.
