So I just finished the (surprisingly rigorous) process to volunteer at a local hospital. I am supposed to start my 3 hour, 1 day a week volunteer shift next week. I went through a mini-orientation with the floor coordinator yesterday, but I feel like it was a bit lacking in guidance (besides Hospital policy info).
Anyway, I have a couple questions for you RN’s. They’re having me do “rounds” – aka I will be visiting with patients. What exactly should I be talking to them about? I’m explicitly not supposed to ask them “how are you?” – how do you make conversation? Do I just ask them I can get them anything to make them more comfortable? Do patients normally try to talk to you for extended periods of time? I’m just not sure what to expect.
Are there things I should be doing/asking to help out the nurses? Obviously it’s completely hands-off, but I don’t people to feel like I’m in the way. As a nurse, what do YOU expect from a volunteer?
