I’d say it’s worth a try to temp!  Some women are thrown off by different schedules more than others, and some are not.  You could still see a pattern even with an irregular schedule.

A big temping benefit for me over using strip tests is the cost!  Watching for fertile CM is a good way to know when you’re fertile; temping in addition to that is important to be because we’re not trying to conceive yet, and I like to see the sustained temperature rise that happens after ovulation to know I’m not fertile anymore.

Another big positive to temp-ing along with everything else is the fact that a temp spike actually confirms O. Sometimes your body can gear up to ovulate (produce fertile CM, have an LH surge that gives you positives on OPKs, etc.) but doesn’t in fact “go through” with the ovulation. So really the only way to know that you are for sure ovulating is by using temps and recording a solid temperature spike.

Temping definitely helped me! I was off BC for a few months before we started TTC and temping helped when we needed to avoid my fertile time.  You can also tell when you’re going to get your period, which I loved because I was terrified of it just showing up! I think you only need like 3-5 hours of sleep, in order to take an accurate temperature.  If you do decide to temp, using an app on your phone really helps because it does all of the work for you.  The first month we started TTC, I was charting and used my ovulation test strips to ensure I was ovulating.
