jayquellen :  Indeed. We agreed to get married (and planned a very small, low-cost wedding) in the same year that I also started my own business and FH went back to school full-time. We live in a very expensive area and have money is really tight at the moment.

Finances seem a bizarre reason to delay committment, that wouldn’t fly with me.

hispanicimpressions :  Yes, having the wedding you can afford is the way to go! Even if you want to save money for a time (say 2 years) in order ot afford such wedding, that doesn’t hold back on becoming engaged and planning for said wedding. We’re having a 2.5 year engagement because of finances, which is fine by us.

I’d much rather have a long engagement and be able to talk freely about our wedding (and get good deals since we’re so early to the game), vs being uncertain if he would ever actually propose and continuing to be in the ‘powerless’ waiting game for an extended period of time.
