I have been torn between princess and cushion for a while now and after I saw the setting I wanted in person I liked the princess. As far as stones go though i like the cushion more. The setting is vintage-style and I think the cushion would go better. Heres my problem…every cushion I see that is set looks more round than I would like. Once the prongs are sitting on the corner it just looks round and I want that pronounced cushion shape. So I have been thinking about my setting (I will post a pic) and wondering if instead of regular prongs I could get something like a “v” prong for a princess, but on a cushion. I like that the “v” prong really enhances the shape of a princess and keeps it square looking so if you just rounded it a bit could it fit a cushion and keep that cushion shape better?

The second is when I saw it in person at the jewlers

I have a RHR cushion cut ring and the stone itself is a rounded square. Not sure is all or most cuchion cuts were this way. Have you looked at an Ascher cut? You might like that.

Hmm, not sure if that exists. I felt the same way and it was part of why I got double prongs– I felt like they cradle the cushion perfectly while not making it look too square or round.

I think maybe you should see a jeweler and ask them to show you cushions with all different length to height ratios. Mine is more of a rectangular cushion because I don’t like when cushions are mistaken for a round- I wanted a distinct cushion! I don’t think the prongs make such a difference once you find the height to length ratio you want. Here’s mine.

@Almost Mrs.P: The double claw definately makes it look more square
@WhatMaeBee: I have thought about that but I think I like the square cushion better
I will ask the jewler eventually, its an hour away from my house. I really dont see why they couldnt do it. It would almost be like the corners had a partial bezel edge.

I think the v prongs would be hard to do, as cushions dont have cut corners like a princess. Defintely ask a jeweler. I have claw prongs and alternates between looking rounded and square I think.
Looking more square:

@MASPA: yeah if the jeweler says it cant be done I think I will end up going with the princess because I really dislike round stones
