1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?   (I am only 12 weeks so it feels pretty early….but I wonder when I should start thinking about that)

I couldn’t wait, so at 12 weeks I started a registry online. I put stuff for both boys and girls, and when I found out what I was having I just deleted the stuff I wouldn’t need. I waited until 20 weeks to actually go to the store and look at stuff. It was a very overwhelming process, there’s so many options and you never know what is best/safest, so it was nice to have a lot of the research done early.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  (how many months along)

I’ve always heard not too early (b/c you want a nice bump to oooh and aaaw over) and not too late (in case the baby comes early. I’m due the end of July and we’re thinking of having my shower early June… but we picked the date out b/c that’s when my sister will be able to make it.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)

12 weeks. I was too paranoid before then, and I still felt weird about telling but I figured it had to happen sometimes.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

We put an offer on a short sale and we’re just waiting. So until we find out that we did or didn’t get the house, we’re not doing the nursery. But I am starting to buy stuff for it, mostly b/c my mom is going crazy shopping and who am I to stop her? So far she bought a dresser, a tiny bench, a lamp, and a chandelier, all which is sitting at her house. I’ve also done some DIY (a growth chart and mobile).

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

We’re going to wait for most of that stuff until we know if we’re getting our new house. I just don’t want to have to move things a million times. The only reason we bought the dresser is b/c it’s a one of a kind, it was pretty inexpensive, and we didn’t want it to be scooped up by someone else.

@spraguebride:

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?   We waited until 24 weeks to register.. I guess in my mind that was “viability” so it somehow made it okay.. probably silly reasoning. But you could register at anytime!

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  I’ve heard somewhere between 2months-a month before your due date. I had mine at 34 weeks and I was still feeling pretty good then.. I’m not 37 weeks and not very comfortable at all.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? We waited until 12/13 weeks to tell everyone… including our parents.

4) When did you start working on the nursery? I LOVE to work on my house, so once we had told our families around 12 weeks, we started picking out paint, etc for the nursery. I knew that whether we had a boy or a girl that we were going to do a teal accent wall with cream on the other walls.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…? We went shopping for our crib around 22/23 weeks. My mom was in town and she wanted to go. But you could really buy at any time.. I’ve even heard of people waiting until the baby is born to figure out if you will even use it!

I don’t know what’s typical since not many of my close friends have had kids so I’ll just answer for me.

1) Register for baby stuff?   I think I started doing this right after we found out we’re having a girl (20 weeks) – I didn’t really tell people that I had made one until a few weeks ago though because I keep changing stuff even now.

2)  baby shower?  I’m having mine in a couple weeks so about 5-6 weeks before my due date.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)  I told one of my bosses right away since I worked in a biology lab with viruses and bacteria that are known to cause baby damage (listeria was one of the agents), we told my family around 7 weeks, people around us when we heard a heart beat at around 9 weeks and I wrote that we were having a girl on fb at 20 weeks when we found out.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?  I started cleaning out her room in my second trimester.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?  Around 30 weeks and figuring out what we get at the baby shower and then doing a mass order so hopefully it’ll be finished up with a month to spare – I’m kinda nervous about having her room completely set up though and empty, it’s a bit creepy to me for some reason.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?   I started registries about month 3 since I am a researcher and I finished the registries about month 7 when people started asking where we were registered.  I didn’t want to be pressured to put everything on the registry very quickly so I’m glad I left myself a lot of time.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  I’ve always heard during the 8th or 9th month.  Mine was in my 8th month but I would have prefered waiting another 2 weeks but it really wasn’t a big deal either way.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? We told everyone by 12 weeks.

4) When did you start working on the nursery? We started painting/preping the nursery 4 months before our due date.  However, we didn’t officially finish the nursery until after our LO was born (we were still missing pictures on the wall) but everything else was done 3 weeks before our LO came along.  We had some drama with paint, wall paper, etc so there were several weeks lost to disasters.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?  We started shopping for furniture about 4 months in and then had picked by 5 months in.  It was a good thing for us since the furniture we picked took 3 months to be made.

This is my first, and I am 16 1/2 weeks right now (due early September)…but here are my thoughts on your questions:

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?   (I am only 12 weeks so it feels pretty early….but I wonder when I should start thinking about that)

I am not planning to register for another month or so.  I don’t really see a need until closer to my shower.

 2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  (how many months along)

My sisters are planning to hold  a shower in mid July (1 1/2 months before due date).  Personally I think 1-2 months before is good timing.  I would have preferred mine a little later (closer to 1 month before) but it wouldn’t work for us logistically.

 3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)

I told family and close friends right away.  We told everyone else at about 9 or 10 weeks.  We felt that we had seen the heart beat and felt if we had a miscarriage at that point we would want people to know about it.  Also, we were (are!) just really excited!

 4) When did you start working on the nursery?

Not planning to start the nursery until June/July.  I’m a teacher and will be off then.  Also, by then we will have registered and had time to think about what we want.  We might actually have things to put in it at that point!

 5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

We have not bought any big ticket items yet.  I figure we will register and see what we need after the shower.  I have bought a few cute onsies though!  And I am keeping my self occupied by buying maternity clothes!

I’m not sure. I’ve started my registry and I’m 16wks.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  (how many months along)

A month or 2 before the due date for my friends

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)

12wks, family at 8wks

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

I plan to start in July, 2 months before my due date since I’ll be off work for the summer. We’ll paint the room before then though, once I figure out a color.

5. when did you start buying big ticket items?

I haven’t bought any because my mom is buying the crib and the other big ticket stuff can wait until July.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?

We waited till 24 weeks because then we knew the sex, but also I didn’t want to register too early as inventory changes (Babies R Us said their clothing changes every two weeks).

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?

Shower should be around 2 mos before the due date. Then you don’t have to store everything for a long period of time, but you still have time to exchange and wash things.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

Family & few very close friends = 13 weeks
Office = 17 weeks
After that I didn’t really “announce it” but I posted some pics on Facebook around 20 weeks – I assumed by then people I was close to already knew.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

In the 7th month. I didn’t want to do it too early (just in case the worse happened) – we just got all our furniture, I’ll work on our bedding and decor in the next couple of weeks.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

Same as above – we started looking around 6 mos but didn’t buy until recently. Also I didn’t want to convert one of our guest rooms too early because then we’d have less space for guests.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?   (I am only 12 weeks so it feels pretty early….but I wonder when I should start thinking about that)

Darling Husband and I went into Babys R Us at like week 9. We were only looking at the quality and prices of their stuff ans we heard it was a bit ridiculous and I actually made a registry so I would have the EXACT items and upc numbers on hand. I didn’t want to forget. We didn’t register for anything else, just the specific things I wanted and thought I’d forget.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?  (how many months along)

I’d rather wait to have a shower until I know the sex, it’s not so hot outside (Septemberish for us), and I have a massive belly πŸ™‚

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)

We plan to start spreading the word this coming week (12 weeks) and then Darling Husband wants to make a FB announcement so I told him he could to that at 13 weeks.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

Unfortunately, since we’re renting and planning on moving once we find the right house (which we’re actively searching for like mad people) we don’t want to even really start the nursery. Ever. Not here at least. Painting it would mean painting it back in a short amount of time and I don’t see the need.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

My mother found a beautiful, neutral colored Ethan Allen bassinette (I didn’t even know they made bassinettes!) back in June of 2010 at a super cheap price. She bought it for me then, but made me promise I wouldn’t have a use for it before the wedding lol. As things go clearance at my weekend job in the infant section I pick them up. I’ve been doing it for years and actually have a pretty great assortment of clothes and bottles/nipples/nuks that are brand new, never opened. What can I say, I’m a hoarder πŸ™‚

1) register for baby stuff?

I waited till about a month before my shower, but I should have done it before Christmas, since my family got us lots of baby stuff. Some of it (like clothes) they are more than welcome to pick out on their own, but we also got a Diaper Genie we won’t use since we’re going with cloth.

2)  have a baby shower?

Had mine around 32 weeks- it was the only weekend in either Feb. or March that worked for all 4 of the hostesses. It was a good time- I definitely looked pregnant, and I felt way better than I did, for example, just a few weeks later.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

Told immediate family around 8 weeks, and two supervisors at work around 10 weeks. Started opening up to a few more close friends around 13-14, but still not many. Plenty of friends that we see semi-regularly didn’t know till about 20 weeks.I told a few more work people around 24 weeks and after that it kinda spread and wasn’t a secret at work anymore. I’ve still never posted anything online about it, but Darling Husband did around maybe 33 weeks for the first time and got a bunch of “wow, congrats, we had no idea” messages.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

HAHAHAH. Um, a little after 36 weeks? This weekend I’m 37w2d and we might…*might*…have the nursery 70% done by Sunday night. Thank goodness my mother is coming into town next week. She gets everyone’s butts in gear.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

We really didn’t buy anything on our own for a loooong time. We received a couple big gifts (like our glider) for Christmas, and then several more (carseat, bouncer, crib, crib mattress) for our shower at 32 weeks. Then I went nuts at about 36 weeks since I felt so far behind and my husband went and ordered like 20 things on Amazon (like a newborn first aid kit and a swing). I still haven’t ordered a dresser or changing table or the vinyl wall decals I want for over the crib.

Don’t be like us, though. We are lazy bums. πŸ™‚

1) register for baby stuff?

I’m 20w today, and we haven’t done this. We’ve been asked about it once by my husband’s stepfather, because he wants to buy a car seat/stroller for us. We don’t know if we’ll do one of these or not.

2)  have a baby shower?

No plans for one to my knowledge. Everyone else’s advice here seems to be consistent and makes sense.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

Told my parents at 6 weeks, rest of family and friends at 13 weeks, and letting the word trickle out to everyone else organically. We’re still getting “Congrats! Didn’t know!” messages from people.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

We’ve decided which room we want it to be, what things we want to have in it and where and have started storing things in there as we get them. That’s it for now. No plans to paint it since we like the colour it is already. I expect we’ll set up the crib, etc. a month or two before the baby is due.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

I’ve been watching kijiji/craigslist consistently for good deals and so far we’ve gotten a crib, change table, nursery bedding, high chair and baby tub in excellent condition, all for $115. We’re just storing them in the “nursery” for now.

Family is going to buy the travel system (car seat and stroller) for us probably a couple of months before the due date, and my parents have asked us to choose a “big ticket” item for them to buy for us. Not sure what that will be yet – we’re going to wait until the baby’s born to see what we actually need – maybe it will be the breast pump/bottles.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?

I started a registry early (you can always add to it/delete/re-work/etc) with the help of following my cousins that was still avaliable on babiesrus.com and looking at registry guides.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?

I had one baby shower February 26, one March 20 and one coming up this weekend April 3…I’m due April 27th πŸ™‚

3) How far along were you when you told everyone? (not just family…but EVERYONE)

I was 10 weeks…we wanted to wait till the end of the first trimester but we were really excited and had known since 3 weeks so…:)

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

We moved into a new house in January so it was painted in January and we started moving things into the room  in February.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

We got the crib/changer combo as a gift and it was delivered in February. We just got the glider today (we had custom ordered it so it took awhile). We still don’t have the stroller. We didn’t buy clothes until we knew it was a girl.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?

We started a list almost right away, but we probably won’t officially start one under our real names until around 24 weeks or so.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?

1-2 months prior.  My friend has hers two months prior and she said it was a bit nerve wracking to wait that long.  She wanted to get everything set up (nesting) but couldn’t because she wanted to wait and see what she got at her shower.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

We told family 7-9 weeks, Friends 10-12 weeks, work around 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks we were openly telling everyone.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

We started cleaning stuff out around 16 weeks.  We are at 20 weeks now and starting to think about picking out bedding so we can get paint up soon.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

I kinda think whenever, but you’ll want somewhere to put it if your nursery isn’t ready.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?

I started a couple online after we found out the sex so when we went to the stores we just had to scan stuff instead of filling out paperwork.  We did the scanning around the 6 month mark when I wasn’t too huge and uncomfortable yet.

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?

We just had mine yesterday and I’m due in a month.  Ideally I would have liked it a few weeks earlier because I feel like I have sooo much to do and it’s hard to do it because I’m bigger, more tired, and swollen, so I can only do so much at a time before I have to just sit and rest.  But, it didn’t work out for the people who planned my party, so that’s why it happened when it did.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

Family & few very close friends – 8 weeksWork – Around 12 weeks.

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

We just barely cleared all our junk out a couple of weeks ago once we had the crib, so maybe around the 7 month mark.  It’s still not done in part because the dressers don’t arrive for another 2 weeks.  As far as decor, though, we are just putting in furniture, a rug, and some curtains, but we are going to keep things pretty simple for a bit.

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

We bought the crib about 6.5 months (I just remember it was Superbowl Sunday!) and the dressers.  We were able to take the crib home that day, but the dressers had to be ordered and they take 8 weeks.  I wish I would have known because I would have ordered sooner!  So, make sure that’s something you look into so you aren’t still getting furniture 2 weeks before your due date like we are going to have to do, it’s a little stressful.

1) When do people typically register for baby stuff?

24 weeks- for the same reason as jubyju22 πŸ™‚

2) When do people typically have a baby shower?

I think a month or two before the due date. Mine will be about a month before.

3) How far along were you when you told everyone?

13/14 weeks by phone/email/in person but we still haven’t shared with facebook…

4) When did you start working on the nursery?

we figured out what we were going to do pretty early on, and since baby will be in our room for the first 6 months or so, we’re not going to bother with a nursery for now…lazy i know πŸ™‚

5) When did you start buying baby items like the crib, etc…?

we haven’t really started yet but we’re visiting our parents (first grandchild on both sides) when I will be 29/30 weeks – and I think we’re going to go shopping with them so they can be involved.
