I really love the look of submerged flowers, especially orchids, but I am at a loss as to how to keep them from floating upwards! We’re going to have really tall vases with multiple different coloured stems of orchids in each one, so we want them all to ‘float’ at different levels. We’re also having an LED light below the vase shining upwards (FI’s idea!) so don’t want to fill the bottom with pebbles or similar.
My current idea is to find small, heavy glass beads that are completely translucent so wont interfere with the light, and then secure them to the orchids with fishing wire or similar, which we would vary the lengths of to get the different strands floating at different levels. Would this work at all?
Also looking for suggestions on how to incorporate gerberas into this type of centrepiece, as they will be my primary bouquet flower and I want to keep some continuity between the floral arrangements. Maybe have some heads of gerbera scattered on the table at the base of the vase? Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated!

Normally the flowers are secured by using pebbles or using fishing line attached to a weight, so your idea of the transparent beads should work well.
The key to many centerpiece ideas is to do a mockup. Buy a few flowers and one large vase and try it out.
I honestly don’t think you need to worry about continuity with the gerberas. They are so different from orchids.

We got fake orchids and they don’t float. They puff up real pretty and look great, but no floatage problems, especially not with the floating candles on top.

Thanks! I figured it was something similar, just wanted some confirmation. Closer to the date I’ll do a trial, I’m not taking any chances.
Where did you get your fake orchids from? I would like to use fakes if possible, but I’ve found they can actually be quite expensive – I’m getting my real flowers from a market where they are ~$1 per orchid stem, and would be happy to use fakes if they are the same price or cheaper?

Try clear water pearls and place the orchids between them, the instant you pour water into the vase it’ll give that floating illusion. Save-on-crafts.com usually as a good deal on the water pearls.
