Hey, Bees! My husband and I have just purchased a house- we are getting the keys to move in tomorrow night from the seller. Are there any last minute questions we should be asking? A good one we thought of was “What day does the trash go?” or “what fuzes control what appliances/rooms?” We’re trying to think of more to ask- not so much big questions, but smaller questions that are not often discussed when purchasing a house.

We haven’t asked such questions. I usually find that information on the city government’s site or I just wait to see what neighbors do!
I’d ask if there were any spare keys.

Congratulations! Not sure if any/all of these would apply based on your neighbourhood, but how about:
-Which mailbox is yours (unless you get all of your mail delivered to your door). Our newer neighbourhoods tend to have communal mailboxes, whereas our older neighbourhoods still have door to door service
-Passcodes to security systems, garage pad openers, etc.
-Current utility providers (in the event you want to continue with the same service provider).

We didn’t really have an opportunity to ask the sellers questions when we bought our house. They signed their papers before we had finished ours, and popped in to say hello and left. I did ask our realtor about the trash and he let us know before closing but otherwise we figured things out on our own.

What mailbox is ours?
How did they like the neighborhood and if they felt safe.
What’s the password to the security system and if they were shutting it off.
How many keys there were.
What days trash goes out.
How the utility bills were arranged.
This is our first house and in different cities some utilities are combined and some are not. So our water and trash come on the same bill and then gas and electricity are separate. They voluntarily told us when they scheduled the utilities to be turned off so that we could transfer them in our names. I’m glad they did because we weren’t able to transfer the water/trash and gas to the property until we provided the closing statement proving we were the new homeowners. So even though we were in escrow they wouldn’t let us set it up before the proof.

They told us which day was trash day, and we asked them for the code for the garage door. I think that was it….
