Well, I just found out that we have friends coming over in about 2-3 hours to celebrate the New Years. They are making an 8 hour trip to come here, and they meant for it to be a surprise (4 people in total, 2 couples), but they realized that we’d moved and didn’t have our new address (same town, new house) so they just called me and “Surprise!” I’ve got guests coming over.
I do not typically host parties. Let me rephrase that. I. CANNOT. HOST. PARTIES. I suck at it. So, so, so, badly. I’m not prepared to host a party even. I mean, on top of needing to do my hair and makeup (DH and I were planning on bumming it in our PJs and watching Twilight Zone), I need to run to the store and get snack foods that I can make QUICKLY. Thankfully Darling Husband and I have Gin, Tequila, and Rum left over from the wedding, so we only need mixers (cranberry juice, marg mix, etc.), but I need fast, good, food. So any suggestions for an on the fly party shopping list would be great. I’ll be sending Darling Husband so I can get stuff ready here.
I don’t really like parties, and I hate surprises, but our friends’ hearts are in the right place so I’m not really upset, but it doesn’t make it any less hectic and stressful on my part.
(Sorry if I don’t reply immediately – I am going to be running back and forth trying to get the house a little picked up, run the vaccuum, etc.)
Thanks in advance!

Buffalo chicken dip:
2 packages cream cheese
half bottle (6-10 ounces) of ranch dressing
half bottle of Frank’s Red Hot buffalo sauce
2 large cans of canned white meat chicken
1 cup of sharp cheddar shredded cheese, stirred in at end
I make this in a crock pot and serve with tortilla chips or crusty bread. Super easy and a huge crowd pleaser. It’s already cooked, so you just need to get it hot enough to be melty.

@MeghanFly: Um. This is like the worst surprise EVER. THEY should be the ones bringing stuff! They can’t expect you to just have a party waiting to go when you weren’t expecting people!
That said… if I was throwing a small party at the last minute, I’d go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s and get premade or toss-in-the-oven apps and mini desserts. Maybe some fancy cheese & crackers. A few bottles of bubbly and some fruit.
Honestly, don’t sweat it. I know they thought it would be fun or whatever but it’s actually INSANE for people to drop by like that. I really, REALLY hope they are bringing food with them.

Chips, dip, and I’d order pizza and wings!

@cmbr: This is my favorite recipe in the entire world. I seriously make this recipe 3-4X a year, and Darling Husband and I sit down and eat it for dinner. That is how much we love it.

@BrandNewBride: I second order in pizza. They surprised you so a) you have an excuse and b) they might chip in 😉

@cmbr: Check. Thanks. Darling Husband is gonna pick this up. Sounds DELICIOUS!
@MexiPino: Gave your suggestions to Darling Husband as well. Pre-cut fruit trays (if they have any left), and any microwaveable/oven heated apps, and any kind of finger food desserts. Check. Thanks.
Yeah, but this group of friends is more the think with your heart type. Love ’em, but definitely more spontanious than I am. I just feel like without good food/drinks people get bored quickly. Thanks for the kind words.
@BrandNewBride: Chips and dip on the list too. We’ll order some wings as well. 32 wings okay? Thanks!
@lalalyanne: Darling Husband and I don’t eat pizza (we don’t like it, haha) but I’ll order a medium one in case they want to eat it. It’s only $6.00 on top of the wing order, so even if they don’t chip in we’ll be okay. Maybe I’ll get those pizza bites?
Thank you ladies! Darling Husband just left.

Update: Whew! What a whirlwind of a night to bring in 2014. Anyway, thank you all for the suggestions! They were yummy, and great for last minute, but totally not needed. My friends brought a full finger food buffet and the booze to boot! I wish they had told me though (but they wanted to keep a little surprise for me), and they felt bad when they realized that Darling Husband and I scrambled about to get food together last minute.
It was nice though, to have some warm foods to snack on, and this afternoon after my friends had gone I found that one of them left a $20 bill with a note that said that it was to help cover some of the food we purchased for last night (aww!). I think I know who it was by the handwriting, but she won’t cop to it, and they are all acting like they don’t know anything when I called (so I am guessing that they all went in together). Either way, it was nice to see them all, even though it was a huge last minute surprise.
Thanks again! <3

Aww how sweet! I love it when things turn out better than expected. Youve got a lovely, albeit spontaneous for us planners, group of friends 🙂

Sounds like they still have a college dorm mentality. I am sure their spontaneous hearts were in the right place, but maybe the lightbulb is starting to go on for some of them.
