You should be able to buy one in any subway station, though sometimes not at every entrance to the subway station – the entrances that don’t have a vending machine will say “entrance with metrocard only” or something to that effect.

I’ve never heard of buying one from a retailer, but I moved away from NY a couple years ago, so maybe that’s new.

@brisebride: Looks like they don’t have 1 day passes anymore. So your best bet would be to just buy a pay-per-ride card and put as much money as you think you will need for rides on it.

A $10 pay per ride gets you $10.70 on your card and each ride is $2.10. Single ride cards are $2.50.

Almost all subway stations have metro card vending machines.

I don’t know if the 1 day fun pass is still an option, but there are vending machines inside every station. Hmm, 51st and 3rd is right near my work, I know at least the 6 stops on 51st and lex so worst case you can get a pass 1 block over.

@KatNYC2011:  What?! Why do they keep changing things?  I feel like I am going to move back in a few years and not be able to tell the west side from the east side.

Kids these days!  [or other crotchety change-resistant cliche]

@brisebride:  Four times.  Each ride is 2.10.

There’s a station at 53rd and Fifth Avenue with E and M trains within walking distance of where you’ll be, just FYI.
