Ask if she or her guy NEED anything – we’d forgotten our toothbrushes so the girlfriend who showed up with those was a lifesaver! Honestly, anything that’s a “thing” is just something else to carry home when you’re already freaking out about your newborn in a car for the first time…if she doesn’t have any demands, I’d go for a yummy snack (bakery pastries) or if it’s near a meal time, some takeout (hospital food is gross) and/or a small flower arrangement. What you’re planning to do for her at home sounds awesome!!

Things that I really appreciated while in the hospital: gourmet chocolates, a pretty nightgown (I felt gross & it made me feel put together), magazines for when baby’s sleeping/nursing & flowers.

ETA: Oh, I forgot, someone also gave me some nice body wash & watched the baby so I could take a long shower…that was awesome & made me feel “human” again 🙂

One thoughtful gift could be the newspaper from the day that her little one was born on.  Lots of new Moms like to have that as a keepsake, but don’t really have access to get one from the hospital bed!

I second the votes for a yummy snack, like bakery goods or good chocolates.  I haven’t had my baby yet, but a friend of mine who recently gave birth advised me to stear clear of flowers and go for food since hospital food isn’t very good.

You are so thoughtful 🙂 I agree with PP that a nice snack would be great. I also really like the long shower idea that would have been amazing when I was in the hospital. Balloons and even flowers (maybe that’s just me) are such a pain to have to bring home and end up in the trash.

When I had my son, it took 2 days before I was allowed to eat solids, and when I was allowed, my stomach couldn’t take much more than a few bites of that bland hospital food (Christmas was 2 days later and a very bland one for me..). Anyway, I would have been bummed to see delicious food brought to me that I couldn’t touch. Not everyone is in my situation, but check with her if she can eat before bringing food.

I second the idea of a shower though! I desperately needed one and wasn’t able to take even one, between the feedings and trying to sleep and the visits from our families and all the nurses. If someone had brought a nice shower gel and shampoo and offered to watch Little E while DH helped me in the shower, that would have meant the world to me.
