I just joined Wedding Bee today, so forgive me if I make any mistakes.
I married my sweet wife on Monday after six years together. We’ve been planning this big (to us) wedding for 60 people next year, and everything was getting out of control. So, we took a deep breath, and decided to just do it when her parents were in town visiting from Oregon.
We’re lucky that we live in D.C., where gay marriage is legal. I’m a native Washingtonian, so to get married in my hometown made everything even more special. Now, the planning for the big blowout next year begins…
Here are a few pics of our special day:
It’s amazing what a difference being married makes!

We have a lot of pictures on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151218148264196.543506.579824195&type=3. We had a friend take pics, since a professional photographer is WAY too expensive, especially last-minute. I think our friend did a remarkable job.
Thanks so much! I have a friend who’s a milliner, and she made it for me last-minute (aka the night before the wedding).

Congrats ladies!! You both look gorgeous and oh so very happy!
I’m temtpted to do the same thing you did and bail on the whole ceremony in front of 70 people. I know it’s not relatively that many, but it sure feels like it! Good for you for going with your instincts and doing what felt like the right thing for you!

@KelannaDC: Wow, that’s awesome to have someone who could make you something that beautiful! And so quickly!

@Taeyers: We’re still going to do the bigger event next year, and I’d be lying if I said that there aren’t some hurt feelings over our decision, but this just felt right. The ceremony space was cozy and beautiful and full of love. It was us, our parents, my younger sister, one of my law school friends, a boarding school friend, and the sales/catering director from our venue for next year.
I can’t tell you how much it meant to have a pared down event that really was just about us. If you think it won’t cause too many problems, why not do something small and follow it up with something larger? 🙂
Here’s our beautiful ceremony space:

Wow, it’s really lovely! There are so many beautiful unique accents…
Will next year’s event be a second ceremony, or more of a reception, or both? Were any friends upset that you pulled the trigger without inviting them? I’m leaning heavily towards a destination wedding with just immediate family (as in like 7 people total), and then coming back home for a cocktail reception for the 70. It’s probably the best for us, and then they can’t complain about not being invited because they probably wouldn’t follow us to Jamaica or wherever else anyway 🙂

@Taeyers: Next year’s ceremony will be the whole shebang. We want people to be able to see us process in on our dads’ arms, say vows, etc., and then do the seated dinner. If we could’ve afforded a destination wedding this time, we’d have TOTALLY done that! Weddings in DC are so ridiculously expensive, it’s not even funny.
Destination wedding: the ultimate guest list reducer. Hahahaha

@KelannaDC: Good for you guys and I love the gowns! My guy and I signed the paperwork here just him and I declaring it to each other. Next year we’re having the whole ceremony bit with family so that we can share. When it feels right it feels right and the private moment means so much, but I am sure sharing it with family will be just as amazing.
I think thats why theres a lot of tv shows that have done that lately too. They did that in that bad Rock Wives reality TV show, in How I Met Your Mother and The Office. lol. Oh and Frasier back in the day.

@Mrs Christopher: Thanks! I LOVED the episode of The Office where Jim & Pam got married. To see that they’d already done the actual ceremony prior to the flash mob hilarity was priceless. Thanks for reminding me of that.
