I think that if is at a social event and partners/spouses etc are present then it is perfectly aceptable.. Now if it was in the office in office hours..NOT ok…

Yeah…no. We have a professional relationship, no hugs for you. But I’m also not the hugging person. I hug my friends when I leave because I know it’s THEIR thing and I know they like it so I just suffer through the whole thing but I don’t like touching people if I don’t have to. It would be even more odd if it was a boss. Gender doesn’t make a difference to me. Hugging is hugging and a professional relationship is a professional relationship. There’s just no room for it.

I’m a hugger & have always had professional but friendly relationships with my co-workers/bosses, so hugging is the norm (not everyday, but special goodbyes, etc.)

Now I will say that these are normally side hugs or very quick front hugs.

That’s funny that you brought this up. I’ve had a lot of male colleagues and supervisors and some actually attended my wedding. Like you, we DO NOT hug “in real life” but when they showed up at the wedding, I did receive a “good bye/best wishes” hug. Some of my male friends that were my classmates at school are like this too. We didn’t hug at school but when we hung out at parties/went out to dinner, then we hugged. Of course, there are not like bear hug/clingy hugs; it’s like a “dude”/side hug or a quick “let’s just lean in at the shoulders” hug.

So I guess for me, this is totally normal, but maybe I’m not the right one to ask since I’m not a hugger to begin with.

I work in a pretty small office (less than 20 people) so we’re pretty laid back around here. Even with that, I think the only time I’ve hugged any of my coworkers (that aren’t also friends) was when I hugged my boss the day he found out his mom died and on my wedding day a few of them gave me hugs of congratulations at the reception.

@misspeanut:  Same with us. The only time we hugged was when we were at the funeral of one of our co-workers. That was such a weird day, I think all the “professional regulations” went out the window based on the circumstances.

I’m a huggy person but I would find it extremely weird to hug any of my coworkers except one who I’m actually close with.

@FutureMrs86:  I’m not the huggy type but sometimes, I feel “obligated” to hug. Weddings and other major events are usually the times I will hug people. I imagine that’s why they did it too.

Not a social gathering…but an amusing boss hug story… I’ve been struggling with migraine treatments for the last 2-3 months and my boss has felt so sorry for me.  He came into my office to send me home early one day last week and went to give me the MOST awkward hug LOL… he’s 57, and not at all the creeper type, he’s very dad-ish, and it was one of those “arm thrown over your shoulders sideways with two hearty pats on the back and a squeeze” hugs and a “harrupmh” as he walked out.  It was pretty funny.

I think hugs from colleagues are ok as long as you restrict them to upper bodies only, you know, bend at the waist and just touch arms really.  The warm feeling is there, without all the bodily contact.
