We had an earthquake here about 3.5 years ago and there was significant damage. About 2 years ago Fiance and I purchased our first house which the previous owners had earthquake and insurance claims against. A condition of the sale was that all claims and insurance was to be transferred to us. Our EQC claim and the insurance policy was transferred into our name but unfortunately the insurance claim on our driveway and paths was somehow left off. It has taken forever for EQC and insurance to sort out everyone’s claim but finally about 5 months ago we were contacted about driveway and paths. This is when we found out that the claim had not transferred to our name. Our insurance company said that this isn’t a big problem, both parties just need to sign a contract transferring it over. Unfortunately, this has turned into a massive problem… The previous owners won’t sign it! They have nothing to gain by not signing it. They don’t own the house so they can’t get the money for the repairs – but neither can we since the claim is not in our name! I am so mad that there are people out there in the world who just won’t let someone else have something just because they can’t have it. I am sure that they somehow think they are entitled to the money that is meant for fixing OUR driveway. It looks like we are going to have to get the lawyers involved… I just don’t understand what is wrong with these people!
Sorry for the massive rant – thanks for listening (reading).
