WeddingBecks:  Honestly, I don’t even understand themes. This might make me kind of a jerk, but I just don’t get it.

But yeah, I see what you’re saying with the Gatsby thing.

WeddingBecks:  I read the book, but never saw the movie, and you have hit a point that I have thought of MANY times.  The book was about superficial selfish people, and I get irritated when people want to have a GADSBY PARTY YAAAY – wait, you mean have everyone sitting around a table judging and bickering eachother whist getting plastered?  Not my idea of a party…

-ugh-

I’m with you, girl!

“Roaring Twenties” or “Flapper Era” would be more appropriate theme names.

Guilty…. I want a “gold/black” themed wedding – but I do NOT say Gatsby — if anyone asked I just say “art deco” — because that’s exactly what it is.

I always shake my head when someone posts about having a Gatsby themed wedding/shower/whatever. Just call it art deco.

But Gatsby had super awesome parties! I don’t think it’s an inaccurate or inappropriate theme. They’re just inspired by the lifestyle, not the tragic ending. Do they have to act out the whole story in order to make it Gatsby themed?

I personally think the theme of a wedding should be you and fiancée. Reflecting your love story, family, passions and personal style. But that’s just me. To each their own. I guess if I was to pick a movie love story I’d go with the notebook or something. At least that’s a real love story.

chronicwhimsy:  the best one of those personalized frames I ever saw had Edward and Bella AND Cathy and Heathcliff on it. How dysfunctional and unhealthy is your relationship if that’s what you choose to compare it/aspire to!?

Justbrynne:  I’ve seen ones which have in some combination:

Gatsby and Daisy

Heathcliffe and Cathy

Bonnie and Clyde

Helen and Paris

Romeo and Juliet

Anthony and Cleopatra

Lancelot and Guinevere

Tristram and Isolde.

THESE RELATIONSHIPS DO NOT END WELL. NONE OF THEM.

I actually wrote three very ranty blog posts about it, haha.

Amazing book (literally just finished it) but completely agree – most people don’t actually realise what the ‘theme’ is based on! Everyone cheating, manslaughtering, being vain….. not nice!

Not everyone is acquainted well enough with historical fashion. It’s probably easier for people to say it’s “Gatsby” themed rather than saying “Art Deco” and then having to elaborate what that means by providing an example most people know (The Great Gatsby).
