rao4400:  Is what they’re charging you $1000 for a higher quality than the $20 ring you got in college? Like, white gold vs. whatever your ring is made of?

Honestly I’d just recommend you get a plain gold band and then revisit the project when you’re excited again!

I get what you mean. My engagement ring was a surprise and I didn’t get much say in it beforehand, but if I did I definitely would have went with a bezel rather than my current setting. It’s still low-ish for an engagement ring (and incredibly secure) but it still protrudes more than I’d like. As it is my engagement ring is now a RHR because it’s too annoying on my left hand as a leftie. I will only wear a wedding band on my left hand.

Could you consider getting a ring set in sterling silver instead of in white gold/whatever other metal you want? It would last for a considerable amount of time and then when you have more money you can get it re-set as an anniversary present or something. Or maybe a place like Gemvara might be able to help you. I’m not sure what your budget is but they have affordable stuff too.

rao4400:  I feel for you, especially since i too had a rant about these horrible jewlery stores on here a couple days ago..  have you checked etsy?)) they might even discount if you let them keep the setting it comes with.

You should probably look for a custom jeweler instead of asking in stores.  My ring, while not bezel set, does have a low airline (or whatever it’s called).  I just found a ring I liked online and my husband contacted that custom jeweler to modify it for my engagement ring.  The website through which I originally found my person was custommade.com (bonus, they make a ton of other stuff too, rather like Etsy without the cutesy crafts).  Might give it a try.

I can tell you are very upset. I think that because of that, I’m a little confused by your post. Are you saying that a jeweler wants to charge you over a thousand dollars to make a prong setting into a bezel, or for a whole new ring? What metal are you looking at? Bezels usually take more metal and if you want any custom filigree type design on it, that bumps the labor up quite a bit. For comparison, I am having a bezel ring made in platinum for a 7mm moissy I already had. The band is about 2mm and there are two teeny diamonds at the top. There are no designs, but the metal will have a satin finish. It will cost 1800. This jeweler is known for creative and cost effective designs. Not knowing much more about your ring, it’s hard to say if you are just upset about the cost of jewelry in general, or if you think that they are absolutely trying to charge you too much for a ring design.

Edit **My feed hadnt refreshed when I wrote that, so you answered some of my questions.

rao4400: What size is your CZ? If it’s the same as the new stone, could you maybe get it swapped out?

I think I saw someone on here that got her moissanite set in a bezel for 200 Not long ago. It was stunning. If I can find the post or do a search for it but I think she got the setting from a shop on eBay. But I think maybe a cushion bezel semi mount will be a bit harder to find. id try to contact some custom jewelry makers in etsy and if it’s just silver it might not be too much to create.
