I agree, and I have actually said things like “its great that you can’t afford to feed yourself, but you can afford a new puppy!”

some people are idiots…more than I want to admit

I have the same thoughts about people on benefits who smoke and drink Yell

I agree with you 100%. I recently had to take in a pet that a friend of a friend was going to put down because he didn’t feel like dealing with the responsibility anymore…HELLO!!!!! Pets are not disposable like that.

I totally agree, it kills me when people complain about not having enough money to feed their own children and then go out and buy(?) a 85-100 pound dog, which is clearly going to be expensive to feed and take care of.

Thank you for writing this! We’re in the same situation as you. While we coudl afford a dog right now, I’m out of the house for 12 hours for my work day…so the entire responsibility of training and exercising the dog would fall to my Darling Husband, and that’s not at all fair. So we’re waiting until I can get a job closer to home that will allow us to properly care for a pet. People don’t realize that pets are a lot of work and a lot of money.

+1

Your tax dollars also go towards picking up strays ( or owner turns ins), feeding them & vetting them for _________X amount of time, then euthanizing them when nobody adopts the pet.

Our societies relationship with pets, pet care and animal needs are so skewed that its heart breaking. Money issues aside, we have some serious problems.

@UpstateCait:  Regarding your own reason to not have a dog, there are services that you can pay to come walk your dog while you’re at work. Maybe this way you could be responsible and still be able to have a dog!

I agree! This really irks me too. I LOVE animals and I can’t wait to have one, but this isn’t the right time for us, especially with a baby on the way. Pets are a huge responsibility and if you can’t afford to take them to the Vet when they’re sick, don’t adopt one.

I totally agree! I always have gotten my animals from rescues, and they often are given up by families who can no longer afford them. Thankfully some of them end up in rescues who are willing to find them homes.. while other end up in kill shelters 🙁 It makes me so sad!

So many people just don’t think about what it entails to have a pet.  They just see “oh – cute puppy!” without thinking about the costs and responsibilities.
