Warning: I talk about dog poop.
I have two new rescue dogs- one has been with us for 7 weeks and the other just over 2 weeks. We have no record for what food the dogs used to eat, so we had to just start them on high quality food when we got them. Our first rescue pup had soupy poop for nearly a month even with antibiotics, parasite checks, and pumpkin to help her out. She’s just now having healthy, solidish BMs. Dog number two was okay for the first week but runny all the second week. She’s on the same pumpkin regimine and is clearly getting better but slowly.
So basically, I have been cleaning up completely liquid stool for over a month now from one dog or the other, sometimes on carpet but it’s no picnic cleaning it up at the park either. The dogs have zero medical history before us, so we have no idea what they may be allergic to, sensitive to, etc.
It drives me ABSOLUTELY NUTS that people keep trying to feed our dogs people food. When we take the dogs to parties we always bring loads of treats for people to give them. Healthy, 3-5 calorie dog treats. I can’t tell you how many times people have tried to sneak the dogs: potato chips, pretzels, cupcakes (!!!!), doritos, and, most recently, a crescent. In case anyone reading this doesn’t know, high fat, high salt foods are likely to dehydrate a dog and upset their stomach. Anything with dairy like cupcakes, rolls, or doritos, is likely to cause stomach and GI upsetedness.
I watch the dogs very carefully and still see friends of friends trying to sneak the dogs food, like I don’t feed them. I always smile and say, “Oh, please feed her a dog treat instead. People food makes her sick!” but seriously, on what planet was letting the dog have your cupcake bottom a good idea? At thanksgiving dinner I caught my father in law trying to feed the dogs crescent rolls under the table. Fat, butter, salt… I’m the one who gets to clean up after a runny puppy later. He had dogs for years, so he should know better. Thankfully the dogs snubbed the rolls, probably because they just ate a healthy dinner followed by healthy treats that clean their teeth instead of bloating their tummies. Ugh people.
