Have the wedding you want. Your mother seems to understand whose wedding it is. Distance yourself from his dictatorial family; if he doesn’t see the need for this, think again about marrying him.

Edit: Apologies, I think I misread your post.

Go with whatever you want and what will make you happy.

willowrose15 : Its ok 🙂 I realized I read it totally wrong. My fault. What you want to do is perfectly fine. Our wedding planning started feeling like it was getting out of control so we scaled it way down and had something a lot simpler with under 50 ppl. It was a wonderful day but I would have been just as happy eloping. Whatever you choose make that decision based on what the two of you think is best. Never mind outside opinions.

I always see people saying ‘just have the wedding you want’… and I agree to some extent but me being a mother, I see the other side and I would be DEVASTATED if my daughter eloped or if I was not present at her wedding, however that looked.  Wouldn’t the 2 of you and just immediate family/parents be a reasonable compromise?

If you’re losing sight of what the day is about, that’s on you.  You’re planning a big dinner party basically – not staging a coup to overthrow a government.  Plenty of people plan weddings for 10, 50, 100, 200, 300 and manage to not “lose sight of the day”.

You’re confusing trying to please everyone with not having a backbone.  No one is forcing you to do anything – you just have to actually stand up for yourself.  You are choosing to cater to them.  Start owning your choices instead of seeing yourself as a victim of everyone else.  Perhaps once you own your choices, they’ll be a little easier to live with and plan.
