For the past 5 months I’ve had really short periods, lasting 2-3 days and they are SUPER heavy. This past one was late, but the cramps kicked in and I finally started. I haven’t been on birth control for years now so I’m not sure why I’m irregular. Does anyone else have super short periods or know the cause of them??
I’m going into the doctor this week but in the mean time, I am completely concerned about this. I’ve read that it could mean that I’m infertile or have a hormone imbalance. Maybe just stress. But after reading some horror stories, I kind of want to pick up a pregnancy test. Maybe this ISN’T my period. Ugh.
So my question is, has anyone else had them/seen a doctor about it?

Well, yes I have but my situation is not necessarily the same as yours. My periods usually last about 3 days and are really heavy. I have PCOS, which is an anovulatory disorder. Like I said though, that isn’t necessarily what yours is.
I think you’re doing the right thing in getting it checked out by a doctor for sure. Better safe than sorry, I say.

@AmeliaBedelia: thank’s for sharing – I actually have been looking up the symptoms and saying “yep” out loud to all of them. So I’m going to have that checked out. If you don’t mind me asking, how/when did you find out you had this??

I have / had ovarian cysts in the past and my period (before going on the pill) was only 2 – 3 days but not terribly heavy. I really miss it because when I went on the pill, they stretched to 6 days and it’s heavier. 🙁

Mine are generally about three days of really heavy flowing. They’ve always been that way except for when I was on the Pill, when they were less intense but a little longer. I think everyone’s just different, but if it’s making everyday life hard because of the pain and discomfort, definitely get it checked out.

@Heatherloveskenny: I found out when I was 18 or 19, I think. I found out because I missed a period (and Fiance and I had a mini-freak-out since we were SO not ready then, ha) and then…it came a few weeks late. So I started noticing that it was sporadic and random. Went to my OB about it and had an ultrasound done of my ovaries (among other things) and confirmed. Mine isn’t terrible (as in, I only have a few cysts that are worth mentioning) and the doctor is not concerned about fertility at this point. 🙂 So even if it’s what you do have, it’s not necessarily terrible. It helped explain a lot of the other symptoms for me as well, which I appreciated. Example: Weight around midsection, hair, etc.
Btw, if you find out you do have it, there are plenty of other bees on here that have it and we all talk pretty openly about it.
