We usually will still tip because a lot of times, the tip is divided amongst other staff members. In addition, it feels kind of weird to us to not tip at all. We’ll usually do slightly lower than our usual 20% (maybe 10%), but we’ll also make a mental note to not go back to that restaurant or I will put an online review about our experience.

However, if I had to wait that long (1 hour is a LONG time), I would’ve gotten up at some point, flagged down anyone that worked there and demanded my check for what’s been consumed. Even if everything was covered, I can’t wait that long for a meal. That’s crazy.

Don’t screw the server because the kitchen staff is in the weeds.

He should have came back to you.  But most servers once the meal is paid its assumed your done… I’d still tip. It wasn’t his fault.  Plus management should have come to your table..

I’d be very annoyed, but I would have still tipped.  Maybe his shift was over a long time before you got your food?  He still should have told you he was leaving though.

@AB Bride:  the server shouldnt have left you hanging. alot of servers think that if you give people free stuff they will tip more, obviously this server wasnt worried about a tip, which is weird. but they did make it a point to get you free stuff. kinda a sticky situation. tip, but not as much as you usually would ?

Yes I would have tipped, they aren’t the ones who run the kitchen so why punish them for it. And they don’t even get minimium wage as a PP pointed out.

i’m a server/bartender, and i’m all for tipping, but i will say that some servers really do suck, and don’t deserve a tip at all.    Servers still need to work for their tips.

*edit* – It may have been the kitchens fault, or it may have been him forgetting to ring in the order… just because people sat after you, doesn’t mean they didn’t order before you.  Their order may have gone in before yours.  Maybe you ordered something that takes longer to make then the next tables order.   etc…. there’s lots to factor in, and he should not have left without a goodbye regardless if it was free…. you are a customer, and you deserve to be looked after from start to finish.
