its understandable if you can afford it. i would have loved to fly out a pro photographer to my wedding. there was just no way i could afford it. i ended up getting super lucky because the one i really wanted happened to be in Jamaica for another wedding the same week as mine.

but i can also see where your fiance is coming from. relative to the rest of your wedding, it seems a bit extreme. but then again, i let myself get suckered into spending alot using the phrase “its your wedding, its ONCE in your life!”

I would do that, but I’m ridiculous.  Lol – sorry, I know that doesn’t help.  My fiance and I agreed that only three things were really imporant to us and were not to be “saved” on: venue/food, the dress, and the photography.  We’ll pay whatever we have to to get what we want in those areas.

Are you sure there are no decent photographers local to your wedding’s area though?  I understand why your fiance would be upset to pay $5,000 for a wedding that is otherwise pretty cheap.  I’m sure it would make him feel better about paying quality professional rates if he didn’t ALSO have to pay for travel.  I’d suggest you keep looking, because there are lots of photographers out there who can give you what you’re looking for.

If you can afford it then do it. Do the 5-5-5 breakdown:
How will you feel about this purchase 5 mins/5 months/5 years from now. I know in five years I would be kicking myself for spending $5000 for a photographer.

There are LOADS of photographers out there that have cheaper packages that have pretty amazing work. More money doesn’t mean better photographer.

What do you get from the photographer in addition to her shooting the wedding? Does it come with free access to digital CD of all pictures? I’m not going to lie, I’m paying $4,900 for my dream photographer. But I’m getting A LOT of stuff from her as well. So I guess compared to what I’m paying, it doesn’t seem ridiculous to pay 5K. It’s also not unheard of to do that. I guess it just depends on what your total budget is.

I’m paying $4,600 for my photog and she’s local. The photog we REALLY wanted (and were going to book) was $6,500 but he had another couple get to him first but my budget is higher than average.

Photos are the only things that you have after the day (other than your marriage of course), but photos are going to be your memories and I believe having high quality photos are VERY VERY important.

I would do it.. but I don’t believe in settling when it comes to my wedding so maybe I’m biased. If you can afford it, go for it. Its important to you.

YOUR PHOTOS ARE ALLYOU HAVE LEFT!!!  Do it, it’s not outrageous considering the cost of some photographers.  It also gives you the hand up that your photographer is state side if there are any problems.  Most destination wedding brides don’t think of that when booking a photographer.   Once that day is gone, those photos are all you will have, and being such a picture lover, don’t sell yourself short on one of the most important days of your life.

i don’t think it’s outrageous at all. most packages i’ve found in chicagoland start at least at $3500 (and that is bare minimum coverage). we got lucky because ours was less than that but we would have absolutely paid a minimum of $3500 if we had to in order to get the quality we desired. i’ve always heard from brides that you ‘get what you pay for’ when it comes to photos.

another bee mentioned the rule of 3 and that is what i’m abiding by as well.

ours was venue, photographer, food/beer 🙂 — dress was on the list but i got my dream dress at a dream price so there was some budget reorganizing.

@Miss Tattoo: i also like the 5/5/5 suggestion. i’ve never heard that before and think i’ll start abiding by that as well!
