I don’t even have thank you cards made up yet. It came as a big surprise, but we’ve already gotten one gift from our registry. We are having a destination wedding in April and our registry is on our wedding website. This guest will not be able to make it to our wedding (they have RSVP’d no)
Do we just send them a casual thank you e-mail to let them know we got the gift and then send a formal thank you card post-wedding? OR do we hold off and send a formal thank you card post-wedding and say nothing now?

You should go out and get some generic thank you’s from michaels and then send them a thank you right away with a nice personal note in it. It would be bad to wait until after the wedding because it is so far out.

@nyota526: Send a card now. We got a gift last month for our February wedding, from a guest who is going to be there! We sent a thank you card immediately.

I agree with PP. We also got our first registry gift this week and I decided to go ahead with thank you notes. If there is a standard here I’d rather break the rules by sending one too early than waiting (in our case) 5 months.

We got some registry gifts very very early. We went out and bought some nice thank you notes to send out to those who sent early gifts.

that was my feeling too. I will get on it. We will need two types of cards anyway. Ones for people who sent gifts and aren’t attending the wedding and ones for folks who are joining us in the Caribbean and also gave a gift.
It’s so exciting to get our first wedding gift! The reality of us tying the knot is becoming very real
