Receiving Line….Yay or Nay?

I like it.

I’m a fan of receiving lines because they go quick and everyone is pretty much guaranteed a greeting (whereas I have been to weddings where large groups of people somehow get missed with table visits).  Granted no one in my circle does the full wedding party one – just the couple and maybe parents.  No one feels compelled to stand around and chit-chat when you are standing between them and the booze and food and there is a line behind them.  Just a quick exchange, a hug or a handshake, and on to the next.

I agree that a receiving line was the tradition for a long time because it is quick and efficient. You don’t lost half your dinner or cocktail hour trying to greet everyone, and you don’t have to worry about long chit-chat sessions when you are trying to get somewhere else. You are assured that everyone gets greeted and thanked. I still think they’re the best way to get it done.

Sad thing is I can’t remember if we did it one last time. It’ll probably be so small and intimate this time no need for one.

We had 65 guests and did a receiving line and I loved it! We actually had some adorable hug pictures, and I loved getting to thank everyone and still enjoy my delicious dinner. It was just H and I as guests left the ceremony into the cocktail hour.

We had a small 50 person wedding.  We did not do one, but I wish we had.  We also forgot to go to each table to say thank you and take a picture.  One regret from our wedding.

We had a 52 person wedding and did a receiving line. It went by quickly and I got to have a moment with each guest. No regrets. We got to enjoy cocktail hour, take some pics and eat our dinner.

We recently changed our minds and have decided to do a receiving line. They just seem more efficient (unless you have like 300-400 people of course) and a lot easier than having to do table visits when all you really want to do is sit down for a bit and actually eat some of the food you’ve paid for. Plus, you won’t have to hear about how offended anyone is afterwards if they somehow didn’t get to speak to you.

Hmm, I guess I’m in the minority here but as a guest, I am not a fan of the receiving line. It literally feels like you’re waiting in line (maybe it wouldn’t be bad with 60 people, but I have waited like 30 minutes standing in hot sun just to get into a wedding reception before). And for what, for the honor of being able to exchange one sentence with the couple? You can’t even really talk with them in the amount of time you have, with a line of people waiting behind you.

surfingabi :  With a 60 person wedding, go for it! Darling Husband and I had a big wedding (roughly 200 guests) and regret doing the receiving line.. only because it cut our picture time in half (receiving line went much longer than we thought it would!)

What’s your timeline and setup like? Have you thought about having a receiving line as guests exit the ceremony? That’s what we did- there was a little breezeway outside the chapel and after we processed out we just parked ourselves there. Some people came through, some didn’t- but we figured we’d at least done enough to give them the option!

My cousin had a receiving line into the reception awhile back and I wasn’t a fan- I just wanted to get into the reception and sit down!
