Right before my Wedding came up, We were getting gifts from the Registry, and cards with checks in them.
I waited till AFTER the Wedding to cash them. I felt like it was the right thing to do.
Now the tables are reveresed. I am going to a Wedding at the end of the month, and Ive decided to write my friend a check, and a card and mail to their home before the Wedding since, its a Destination Wedding and I dont want them to have to carry extra stuff back home.
Now my question is should I write todays date on the check and let them cash it at their descretion, or put the Weddings date on the check?
And is there an ettiquete on when a couple should cash or date a check?

Do you care when they cash it? If not, just put today’s date and send it in. If you want them to cash it (or if you don’t care) – I’d add a note: feel free to cash before the wedding, if you’d like!
I cashed all our checks at the same time – although, I only received one pre-wedding (with a similar note).
Not sure of the official ‘rule’, though.

We received our first one this week for our September wedding and I wasn’t sure how to handle it so I checked Emily Post. It is ok to cash checks before the wedding but not before the check writer has received your thank you note. It’s also important to remember that some banks won’t take a check that’s dated more than 90 days back.

We are cashing our checks as soon as the thank you card is mailed. I HATE when people take months to cash my checks…which is why I usually send a gift card, and just assume it would be equally annoying to someone else. You could post date the check, but then they’d run the risk of misplacing it etc, depending on how long it is until the wedding.

Ok good to know! thanks! I guess Ill just write todays date, and let them decide.

Oh I hate it when people wait forever to cash checks. It’s like I have this money reflected in the bank… that I don’t really have. Please feel free to cash the check before the wedding. Plus you’re supposed to send a thank you card immediately (I thought). So to me, they sent it early… you enjoy it early. I’m actually about to cash a wedding check right now, and we have 6 weeks until we get married 🙂

Our wedding is in 3 days and not one single check and or gift has been given to us.
