I’m not sure what your budget is, but nice ones I saw during my search were

Aberdeen Manor

Waterbird Banquet Center (Chesterton)

Sandcreek Country Club (also Chesterton)

this place in Lakes of Four Seasons looks rather reasonable too http://www.lofs.org/LOFS%20Banquet%20Menu%202009%20new.pdf

oh, and for the record, the walls probably won’t be notice too much if you can pull peoples’ attention to the rest of your decor. I know I hated the dark purple walls of my venue (i was doing light pink, black, and ivory for my colors) but I really didn’t notice once things were all set up and decorated

I went to a reception recently at the Legacy Banquet Hall which was very nice. I would also suggest Strongbows Inn or Aberdeen Manor.

If you are looking in Merrillville too there’s the Elks Hall (Hobart) or The Chateau. We’re having our reception at St. Elijah Serbian American Hall.

Good luck!

Have you checked Avalon Manor?  It’s almost to Merrillville (lots of hotel options there) but is beautiful on the inside.  I went to Valpo University and we used it A LOT for my sorority formal dances.
