What about “Refreshments will be available for our guests at (place) from (time) until 6:15. Please join Mr. & Mrs. L at Reception Venue at 6:30 for cocktails and dinner/dancing/whatever else you’re having at your reception.”?

If you say “refreshments available…” it implies you are paying for it.  Some might be put off when they show up at the bar and have to pay themselves (some, not all).  I wouldn’t do anything in the invitation.  Friends and family can pass on the word at the ceremony that people are meeting up while you are taking pictures.

If you aren’t paying for the refreshment that I would not include anything. I had a 2pm ceremony and a 6pm start for cocktail hour. I just made sure I clearly noted this on the invited. Some people checked into their hotel, others went home, and some did meet at the bar on site and have a drink together. If you are paying for the refreshments then I do like KCKnd2’s recommendation.

@Future-Mrs-L:  We’re doing something akin to that. We have a “Catholic gap” of several hours between the midday ceremony and the early evening reception. We’re going to put an extra page in the program with suggestions (and directions) for fun ways to spend the afternoon. Most of our guests will be visiting from out of town, many of them for the first time, and due to a bunch of scheduling factors the big gap was unavoidable, so we just decided to roll with it and play tour guide on the last page of the program. Something like that would definitely work instead of (or in addition to) the invitation insert.
