  • poll: What did you consider legitimate concerns when planning your menu?

    Allergies/medical concerns only

    Allergies plus dietary choices that are non-negotiable (vegan, vegetarian, kosher, halal, etc.)

    Allergies, non-negotiable dietary choices and slightly flexible dietary restrictions

    I also took non-medical/non-cultural/non-moral "preferences" into account, within reason

    @xiphosura:  ohhhh ok got it.  I wouldn’t expect someone to buy two full on wedding cakes because of me.  So it sounds like you’re really going all out for them and that is very very kind of you.  

    Ok that shrimp sounds amazing I’ll have to try making that one time! 

    It sounds like you have it covered.  If people with restrictions expect to be able to eat alll items that’s just not going to be possible in my opinion.  The only time I was able to eat every item was at my own wedding lol. Congrats and keep us posted I’m interested to hear what the final menu is it sounds tasty.  🤗😋

    @xiphosura:  oh absolutely!  I get it we had two desserts too lol. But just in case you felt like you had to get or make two that’s just not expected.  But if you’re wanting two absolutely go for it.  We also made sure our dessert was gluten free but ended up not needing to be oops… but it was still really good.  

    But it was really really tasty.  So go for it! And have fun! I googled the oxalate thing and it seems to vary so much by person and was way too confusing for me to even have an opinion on that.

    @xiphosura:  We had 2 desserts plus our small wedding cake. Wedding cake was gf as well as 12 cupcakes for me and my sister. and then I also ordered another 6doz non-gf cupcakes. For 27 people. A bit overkill, but they also served as the “favor” so I had cute little to go boxes for guests to take them home.

    @xiphosura:  I’m not a doctor but several of my family members are prone to the same type of kidney stones as your mil. The idea is to reduce your oxalate intake, it’s not realistic to try to avoid it entirely. The big “never eat this again” things are spinach, rhubarb, and okra. Beets, beet greens, chard, and almonds are also pretty bad and should be avoided as much as possible. Everything else is ok in small to moderate amounts (depending on oxalic acid content). Also, eating a calcium-rich food at the same meal as oxalates will prevent a good portion of the oxalates from being metabolized (meaning, they get peed out before they can form into stones). So for example, grits are relatively high in oxalate, but the cheese in cheesy grits makes it more moderate/neutral. Your mil should be familiar with what she can eat and should avoid. It sounds like you have a lot of variety and are accommodating almost everyone. Have fun!
