I’m slightly confused.  So you are getting married in your Fiance home country.  So that is where you are having your courthouse wedding?  Correct?  So what you are wanting to plan is basically a “marriage celebration” party.  Since this is not a wedding you really shouldn’t have a lot of wedding related stuff going on.  Just have some great food, a good bar, some music, a cake and that is really all you need.

I think you can still do some wedding stuff! Cut the cake and wear a white dress at least 🙂 you could also look into a restaurant buy out. A lot of times it’s cheaper. I would also phrase your inquiry as “a family party” and not a “wedding reception”. The price magically increases when it’s a wedding.

Yep27:  Ahhh okay, I gotcha.  I definitely agree with PP about when you talk to places to refer to it as a family celebration not a wedding reception.  I mean it isn’t a wedding reception so need to have to pay wedding prices.

What kind of party are you looking to have?  A big blow out?  A more laid back affair?  Not sure of your location, but if you have a nice size backyard, have you considered having this party at your home?  Or if you want something a bit more relaxed, you could rent out a room at a nice restaurant.  There are so many possibilities, you just need to narrow down what kind of party you want.  And you said you were on a tight budget, so I would try to find venues where you can bring in the alcohol.  Usually when you purchase alcohol and bring it in it is far cheaper then if you go with a venue that provides it for you.

I lucked out a bit on this one, but… try calling historic mansions that are open to the public. Ask if they do events. We got our venue for a song with a very inexpensive per-place buffet because it’s owned by a non-profit historic preservation society.
