I would choose a reception because you will likely go on many amazing vacations throughout your life, but a wedding reception is a once-in-a-lifetime party.

How about doing an afternoon park wedding with a cake and punch reception, and a week in St. Lucia?  That way everyone can celebrate with you, but you won’t spend too much.

I vote for a little of both! Maybe do a little shorter time in St. Lucia and then have a reception when you get back, or some other combination that is right for you guys!!

We knew we wanted to elope and kept going back and forth about whether or not or how to involve family and friends…like you we aren’t about the whole party thing. We opted to do a a super casual vow renewal & reception at my dad’s house a couple of weeks after eloping. The ceremony will be short but my dad will be able to walk me down the aisle and the rest of my family can see some sort of exchange. Only going to be 15-20 family members…my man is gonna grill…and we are going to cook all of our favorite foods and desserts!! We are actually pretty excited because it’s just more us…no crazy planning or prepping…no stress 🙂 Oh…yeah…plus I get to wear my dress AGAIN…very excited about that!! Ha!

Why not just a cake reception for family and the trip?

@SmartCandyGrl: Adults are responsible for their own actions. Do what you can to keep things fair (don’t invite one family’s kids and not the other, for example), sit them far away from each other, and ask your bartender to cut off anyone who is on the edge of overindulging, and hope for the best. It’s tough, but that’s probably what I would do. You might be surprised. I’ve actually seen some weddings bring families back together. It’s a celebration, people are feeling the love . . . you never know!

you could always do a simple kind of reception, like maybe a brunch or dessert and champagne thing. something that wouldn’t cost a ton, but would be nice to celebrate with your family.

i think in general people will minimize the drama for a few hours.

but at the end of the day, its your wedding. do what you want to do and enjoy!
