It’s totally up to you. We’re doing the cake cutting right after dinner while the buffet is cleared off the dance floor, so the guests can eat their cake while watching the first dances. Then we’ll do the bouquet garter toss a bit later. This is the timeline of all the weddings I’ve been to but there’s no set rule.

@TheMunroes:  You can cut the cake, have the bouquet/garter toss, and then serve the cake. Depending on how big your cake is, it can take 30-45 minutes to actually cut it into all the pieces before serving. 

We’re cutting our cake before dinner but not serving it until after dinner, so that the staff has time to bring it to the kitchen and cut it up and plate it.

At my venue they suggested we cut the cake before dinner so they could take it in the back to serve it up. We ended up going with a dessert bar though so no cutting required. Here’s what we did:
