I am newly engaged and in the process of planning (hopefully!) a June 2012 wedding. I am in the process of looking for a reception venue that is within 20-30 minutes of West Chester (where the wedding will occur), for 200+ people, air conditioned, no tenting, and preferably one large space for dinner/dancing. Any ideas?
I have appointments to view RiverCrest and Kings Mill. Any thoughts on either?

Not sure about RiverCrest or Kings Mill but my Dad belongs to Penn Oaks Golf Club and they do a nice job with weddings. We are having ours downtown so alas we didn’t hold ours there but the food there is really good and the grounds are really beautiful. May be worth checking out.

*Waves* Fellow Downingtown HS alumni here! My reception was in West Chester while my ceremony was in Downingtown. I’m not sure what your budget is, but if you have a limited budget like I did. (10K for 130pp) I would highly suggest Milestone Events because they allow outside caterers and some of those caterers allow you to buy your own alcohol. Which could save you A LOT of money.
But if money isn’t a problem, then I would suggest looking at Downingtown Country Club*, West Chester Golf and Country Club, Hershey Mill Golf Club, Graystone Hall, Penn Oaks*, River Crest, Kings Mill, Mendenhall Inn*, Concordville Inn*, Edgemont Country Club*, Town House Bar and Grill*, Shearton-Great Valley is nice, Days Inn in West Chester.
I don’t know if they all hold 200+, some up to 200. The ones with * are ones that I checked that hold more than 200 guests.
Oh, if you are looking for a bakery, you should check out Bakers of Buffington. I love their cakes.
Yeah… I could keep looking forever. That should be a good list for you to check out their websites and such.
Well good luck.
Feel free to PM me if you want any more venues or if you want more details on my wedding.

I am too recently engaged and planning a June 2012 wedding. Definitely will be following your thread here as I am looking in the surrounding area too… but I am definitely more interested in the Center City area. Good luck!

I am getting married on August in Blue Bell, PA but looked for venues all over. I know Greystone Hall and Mendenall are both pretty expensive but if your budget is there they looked beautiful! I would also add The Desmond to the list, they had a nice greenhouse area. I second bakers of buffington I am getting my b-day cake there next week and plan on ordering a grooms cake there. Chocolate chip with buttercream frosting is to die for!

I am getting married at the Mendenhall Inn in December. In an off-season month and on a Friday, the prices are pretty competitive! So far, I’ve been very pleased with the experience and service. I chose it for the BEAUTIFUL staircase and the fact that so much is included (centerpieces and cake, for example…). Also the reviews I read online were wonderful. Happy hunting for your venue! Keep us posted on what you choose!

Mmmm! Bakers of Buffington is delicious – I just had a tasting there and their pound cake was amazing! 🙂
Another possible venue to add to the list is The Farmhouse at People’s Light and Theatre in Malvern. It’s not far from West Chester and the owners are great to work with, the only problem may be accomodating 200+ people (I’m not sure how fleible you are with that number…). I also looked at RiverCrest – the venue and grounds are beautiful, but unfortunately it was a bit out of our budget. Did you get a chance to check it out yet?

Not sure if you picked a place yet, but Meredith Manor in Pottstown PA is worth looking at! I’m from Downingtown, and currently live in West Chester, so Pottstown wasn’t originally on my plan but we took one look at this place and fell in love. And the price is VERY reasonable! You have to use a lot of their vendors, but they’re all amazing… Such as our cake (which is included in the price) is from Bakers of Buffington! Meredith Manor has a pottstown address, but it’s only 30 minutes from West Chester…right down Rt 100. It’s not even really “in” pottstown It’s before it. Good luck!
