We did our first dance / parent dances, stopped for dinner, and then continued on with the reception from there. It was what the dj and venue told us that was the best way, and it did work out well.

We went straight from our entrance into our first dance followed by bride and father and groom and mother dances. Then we kept the music going but we allowed us time to eat. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to eat bc we got caught up in talking to everyone and mingling so after about an hour passed our coordinator grabbed us to do the cake cutting and garter/bouquet toss and then we went straight into dancing the night away. It worked out well….minus the not eating part! We were both too excited and swept up in the moment to notice until it was all over anyways.

I would go with what you initally have planned. It worked well for me!

Why not just have cocktail hour until you arrive, have everyone eat together (including you), then have your first dance and continue the dancing?
