We’re honeymooning in San Francisco in early May and we’re looking for a decent play to stay, which won’t break the bank. We’ll consider B&B’s, vacation rentals, and hotels. So far the Columbus Motor Inn and Handlery Union Square strike us as perhaps being affordable and decent.
Are you from the SF Bay area? Any ideas?

What is your nightly budget? i think both of those hotels are around $150 a night… honestly, I would try bidding on priceline and put it $100 or so a night… my friends ended up staying at the Mark Hopkins that way which is usually about $300 a night. Just select “four star” and only select downtown areas (union square, nob hill, embarcadero, and possibly soma). Travelzoo usually has some really great deals as well: http://www.travelzoo.com/hotels/san-francisco/
I live in SF so if you have any other questions feel free to PM me 🙂

I’m a huge fan of vrbo.com and the prices can be terrific. I’d recommend neighborhoods like nob hill, Russian hill, pacific heights, marina and north beach, since there’s lots to see there. Best of luck, and if you ever need other local revs – restos, things to do, etc, drop me a message anytime!

I would also recommend Hotwire or Priceline. I’ve gotten really good deals through both. I haven’t been there in a few years, but I used to love the Orchard. It’s right on the streetcar line, you can walk down the hill to Union Square. It was very reasonably priced as well.
