Have you tried Bare Essentials? I like that it covers problem areas, but is light and fairly sheer, so it doesn’t look cakey.

Hi there,

So I have some problem areas too and I have found that Laura Merceir and Bobbi Brown work best for me. I have slight rosacea on my cheeks and so they are very red and bumpy. The rest of my skin is great. So I have the very fun challenge of needing something that will provide a lot of coverage but won’t be too thick as then it will just sit on the bumps and look cakey and peely after awhile. I’ve tried MAC several times and it does not work for me. However, I love MAC brushes, shadows…etc.

I have used Laura Mercier foundation for years. Prior to my wedding, I tried Bobbi Brown and really like it. I did half my face in LM and half in BB and just tested out how it wore throughout the day. It was close, but I preferred BB over LM just slightly. It could really just be how my skin is at this very time. I decided on BB for the wedding and have been using that daily now.  I tend to have drier skin, so I use the moisture rich formula, but you may want to try oil free. You’d be suprised tho – I did makeup on a fellow bee the other day who insisted she had oily skin because she breaks out alot. Her skin was soooo dry. We tried the BB on her (after using what she had brought) and it worked really well.  If you have a nordstroms near you – go get some trials done….or purchase the makeup. If it doesn’t agree with you, they have a very good return policy.

It really also comes down to application, especially when you have problem areas. I find the key to covering up my trouble spots is layering the makeup on slowly with thin layers at a time.  I use Mac’s 187 & 188 brush to apply lightly onto trouble spots. It also helps achieve that super smooth airbrush look. Also, I good primer underneath it all REALLY helps the makeup last!! Smashbox photofinish is supposed to be really good. I use Laura Mercier primer and used that on my wedding day. I was married in Cabo and it was HOT and HUMID! I was standing at my ceremony sure my makeup was melting off my face……but by some miracle, it did not! If it could withstand those temperatures and moisture…(it rained that morning which doesn’t happen to often there)….then it should definitely work for you!

Hope that helps,

T

ahhhhh! Not sure why these pics are so huge….

Maybe try Pur Minerals? This is what I use to cover up blemishes. It gives full coverage and you do not need too much of it. Also, since it is pressed, it is much easier to use than Bare Minerals. You do need to use a kabuki type brush with tight bristles.

@AnneTossy: With makeup I find it is worth the investment. I use China Doll by Napolean and I just love it. I have acne scars and flair ups at times and when I need full coverage it does the job!

I follow a tutorial that was posted on the blog last week part of the Helpful series… I use smashbox primer, olay moisturizer and nuetrogena healthy skin foundation.

Mix equal parts in the palm of your hand and then apply. I swear it provides amazing coverage and lasts ALL DAY long. It’s amazing.

I also use Dermablend concelearer on my problem spots and set it with a mineral powder.

I use HD Invisible Cover Foundation by Makeup Forever (Sephora) set with Tarte Smooth Operator Micronized Clay Finishing Powder.  I also really llike the MUFE primer.

Ditto Tanbarr on using a brush for application.  I put the foundation in the palm of my hand and then use a stipling brush to “stipple” it on my face.  Then I use a dense softer “airbrush” brush (Tarte) to blend it all in.  I think it gives the best coverage this way and you can build it up slowly.  The MUFE foundation has buildable coverage.

@AnneTossy:  I have exactly the same problem and am hoping for a solution! I have acne on my chin, my T zone is very oily yet my cheeks are too dry. Have you tried a powder/liquid or both foundation? I’ve only ever used liquid foundation (mainly max factor) and have found that it never covers blemishes and spots, if I put several layers on my chin it looks really cakey and obvious too! Might head to a Boots and talk to an assistand to see what she recommends.

I have really oily skin too.. and I asked what a gorgeously pretty friend of mine had on- it was Estee Lauder Double Wear. I’ve bought it since and never looked back! I only use it in a liquid foundation, and because it is such a great coverall- for work I mix with a little moisturiser to keep it more suble and fresh. For evening wear- I’ll wear it as is.. it is stunning!

It covers blemishes really well and works to balance the redness of pimples and what not on my olive skin.. It’s funny, because before I wore it my pimples were awful- they were all blind and Too Much Information really hard to squeeze (i know, bad, bad.. hehe) but since wearing the foundation daily, my face is much clearer (i have no idea why this is- i thought for sure it’d be the other way around) and if I do get a pimple, it has a tiny head, then it’s gone the next day.. Strange.

Anyway.. It’s just a dream product for me! I’ve recently bought a large professional bottle- like makeup artists use and it cost me about 1/7 of what it usually did- and i got heaps! I just use my fingers to apply, then use a bronzer on my cheeks rather than any powder.

Goodluck in your choice! Hope that helped =)

@AnneTossy:   Aww thank you! I just wished I knew how to make these pics smaller, but I guess since we’re on the topic of makeup, its probably ok!

I feel your pain on the foundation problem!! Its been a life long battle for me. Everytime I get my makeup done at counters in the mall, I end up all cakey in the rough spots. Because of this I was determined to do my own wedding day makeup. In the end, I really wanted to be relaxed so I had a trial and made it very clear to the MUA that I am VERY particular and that they would need to apply the makeup just so. She was very understanding and followed my instructions exactly. The trial went well, so I decided to go for it and have someone else do it. It turned out pretty good – but I can’t say I was 100% relaxed as I was constantly picking up the mirror 😉 Poor woman!

Here’s a list of what we used:

Daily moisturizer: I’m old school and stick with Olay products (has worked wonders for my mother & grandmother’s skin). I occasionally buy some other things to try out..e.g..stricvectin, some retinol cream….etc. But I use Olay products daily.

Also – get a clarisonic!!! I cannot say enough about it. I got one several months before my wedding and it really helped to cleanse, exfolicate and smooth things out. Best money spent!!

LM moisturizing primer

BB corrector and concealer

BB moisture rich foundation, applied as described above.

Eyebrows: filled in with MAC eyeshadow in Brun color (I use this everyday)

Eyeshadow primer: Urban decay eyeshadow primer – love it!!

Eyeshadow base: I’m pretty sure we used Blanc Type (it was a combo of my makeup and my MUA’s stuff)  Either way, you’ll want to cover all of lid with something light like Mac’s vanilla or Blanc type.

Eyeshadow: We primarily used MAC’s Trax (I think its called) as the purpley color you see. I know we used another color as well, but I can’t think of the name. I would guess something a little lighter like a taupe to blend. I’m not sure what highlighter color we used, but I would probably recommend something with a little shimmer like MAC’s Shroom.

Eyeliner: MAC’s black track liner. Laura Mercier also makes a good one. But I was happy with MACs. I also use MAC’s carbon black eyeshadow to help set. I use this as eyeliner pretty regularly as it doesn’t run like a pencil does.

Mascara: I’ve tried LOTS, but also come back to Cover girl’s LashBlast in black. Also, I had on false lashes for the wedding.

We did use some kind of bronzer. I’m not sure what tho! I use Physican’s formula brozer on a regular basis.  I’m not sure what blush she applied, but I use MAC blush in varying shades depending on season, mood…etc.

We did set everything with translucent loose powder. I used Laura Mercier’s powder for this. AND then we gave my whole face a spritz of  MAC’s Fix + finishing spray. Actually I believe we sprayed this on to start as well….it calms skin (which is what I need when I’m stressed or I’ll turn all red!) and it helps to set makeup.

Lips: This was a combo of what the artist had (MAC stuff, liner and gloss), plus my own stuff that I applied later throughout day. I recently helped a friend with her wedding makeup and we used Bobbi Brown’s high shimmer gloss in Maked Plum #7. Its beautiful! I use it daily right now.

….as you can probably tell, I love all things makeup 🙂  let me know if you have any other questions.
