What kind of stuff are you looking to do in Auckland?  I’m from NZ so could probably give you a few suggestions!

@Kemma: A fellow Kiwi! Welcome to the hive!

@Kelly_7777: If you love nature, I’d definitely recommend a trip to one of Auckland’s outer islands. You can climb Rangitoto, a dormant volcanic island. If you enjoy beaches and vineyards, Waiheke Island is definitely the place for you! If you are more about the pursuit of native wildlife, try Goat Island!

Auckland and Waiheke both have many MANY hotels, if you give me some recommendation of how much you are willing to spend I can advise you of some of the options 🙂 There’s a particularly romantic wee lodge out on Waiheke called Palm Beach Bungalows – the website is a bit twee but the place itself is amazing!

@Kelly_7777:

Unfortunately the mountains area where Lord of the Rings was shot is in the other island (not a day trip) but Hobbiton is in Matamata, a couple of hours drive from Auckland (http://www.hobbitontours.com/). Dramatic scenery can be found almost anywhere in NZ, however, and aside from Waiheke and Rangitoto (both of which have daily ferries from downtown Auckland) you could also investigate driving out to the Waitakere Ranges and Piha beach – where much of the Hercules and Xena series of the ’90s was filmed. A nice place to stay on the city fringe is Abaco (http://www.abaco.co.nz/) – great places to eat in this area too. Keep coming back with questions! More than happy to help.

Lol “The other island”.

+1 for Waiheke, also, try and base yourself a wee bit away from Auckland or you’re going to eat up a lot of time getting out of the traffic each day. Maybe try head about an hour further north and start from there. Seriously though, scribbles has it with Waiheke – such a great allrounder that is easy to get to and has lots going on.
