Personally, as much as I love traveling in off season normally I would not want to risk a hurricane on a honeymoon (assuming you are honeymooning right after the wedding).  So maybe somewhere further south like Costa Rica or Panama?  There are overwater bungalows in Panama that are a tiny fraction of the cost of the ones in Bora Bora.

If you’re interested in doing an all inclusive I’d recommend checking out Cheapcaribbean.com. They have really great packages and I’ve tried to beat their prices and can’t. I’ve used them twice and am using them again for a quick Thanksgiving vacation later this year.

If you’re looking for tropical but more adventurous, I really loved Costa Rica. There’s rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, river rafting, loads to do.

If you’re looking for tropical US destinations I think you’re limited to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and maybe the Florida Keys (which a friend of mine has been to and enjoyed greatly).

I think it would be helpful if you included what you are looking for in a honeymoon.  For example, I really wanted a laid back, enjoy the beach and each other’s company type of honeymoon.  We are going to Greece which is awesome but in hindsight it was not a good choice for this particular time.  Too many things we really ought to do as we will probably never go back.

Carribean is so easy from the US and so gorgeous its hard to justify the expense of the South Pacific! We went to St Lucia in Sept for our honeymoon and it was gorgeous.

I agree with the PP who mentioned Costa Rica! There are great beaches and even spas for relaxing, but also other activities like hiking, surfing, and zip-lining. The US and British Virgin Islands are my favorite places in the Caribbean. Great food, people and tons to see and do!

Costa Rica is really pretty and not terribly expensive. I went to Tamarindo for a week for my friend’s wedding and had a great time.

Puerto Rico! Just got back from our HM! It was amazing, and it’s owned by the US so things are pretty easy. Same currency, no customs, same general road laws, almost everyone is bilingual, etc! Then of course how beautiful it is, we stayed about 45 minutes east of San Juan and loved it. We could either be on the beach or in the rainforest in a ten minute span of time. 🙂

cjm18 :  I booked with a trusted agency I normally use for a trip to the Cook Islands …it’s a lot like Bora Bora but muchhh cheaper and in my opinion less “commercially” and more lush/prettier… it’s actually not that far from Bora Bora/Tahiti, which is nice, plus we really had a UNIQUE getaway!  The agency I use is Canadian and they currently have a multi-destination sale on (they specialise in this area of the world): http://www.downunder-travel.com/4for1.aspx

cjm18 :  We went to Aruba and it was AMAZING! I highly recommend. It’s also safe (you can venture off the resort with no problem), has great food (do NOT do all inclusive here – there are so many great restaurants) AND they have the 3rd cleanest drinking water in the world (who knew?). We stayed at the Bucuti and Tara resort.

cjm18 :  We just got back from our honeymoon in St. Lucia. We absolutely loved it. We had a nice mix of relaxation and fun stuff. We did a couples massage on the beach, lounged around at the pool, but also went zip lining, snorkeling, toured a volcano (and did a volcanic mud bath that lef our skin feeling AMAZING), swam at a waterfall, did a sunset cruise, went waterskiing, paddleboarding, kayaking and a few other things.

Bora Bora was at the top of our list too, but we didn’t want to spend that much, and didn’t want to take up two full days in travel time.

I’ve also heard great things about Costa Rica. It’s one of the next places DH and I plan on visiting.

cjm18 :  Yes, we stayed at the Sandals Regency La Toc. We visited one of the other Sandals resorts, the Grande, and it was much nicer.. that’s where we did all of the watersports, as the water was too rough at La Toc. Both are very nice though! Grande is more expensive, but if we go back I’d definitely stay there.  There’s a third Sandals resort, the Halcyon, but we didn’t visit it because everyone else said it wasn’t much different than La Toc.
