A theme is typically colors or the season. Anything beyond that is not required, but you can do whatever you want.

I have been to many weddings over the years, but I cannot think of a single one that I’ve attended that had an actual theme that went beyond the bride’s chosen colors, the season in which the couple was married, or the location in which the wedding took place (i.e. the beach).  I’m sure for those who choose to have one, a theme is a very nice manner in which to express a couple’s individuality, but, as the prior poster noted, it isn’t required.
