I am hoping to get a better job since I am not working the position that I went to school for. My current employers hired me for those skills but not the actual work. Is it innapropriate if I ask them if they would be a reference for me on my job search?

Hmmm great question. Well if you are resigning and don’t burn any bridges, Im sure one of your higher ups would be willing to be a reference. While being employed…I’m not sure.

I think its clear that I’m not going to remain in this position forever but I definitely don’t treat it like that. I just wonder if future employers will not like if I don’t list my current supervisor as a reference.

You can ask them for a written reference for a “volunteer” job you are applying for…. So they won’t know you’re actually job searching. Just make sure you aren’t job searching on THEIR computers…. they’ll see that.

I just changed jobs a few months ago and my old boss knew I was searching and served as a reference for me for my new job (while I was still working under her). I think it all depends on your relationship with your boss.
