Do you have infertility coverage?  I am completely cash pay, and we self referred.  I was able to get seen in about 2 weeks from my initial phone call.  From there, I needed to do a bunch of tests, and get onto my clinics schedule for IVF, so we did our first egg retreival about 3 1/2 months later.  Medicated cycles and IUI would have happened much sooner.

I would honestly just start identifying fertility clinics in your area and try to make an appointment.

I’m in the UK. We had to try for 12 months before doctor would run some test and refer to the fertility clinic. Because we were unexplained we had to have been trying for 2 years before funded IVF.

I fell pregnant naturally just before starting IVF

I would definitely get the referral at your appointment in April.  It can take some time to get an appointment.  Then you (and your SO) will most likely have a battery of tests etc before the doctor can start on a disgnosis, and perscribe a treatment protocol.  I think it is better to start now, while you are still more relaxed about the process.  I got my referral right away as well, and I think it helped me be more relaxed and patient for in the first few months of treatment.  I am nearing a year now of treatments and starting to get really impatient (I don’t think this is the exact right word to express the feeling but I am sure you can understand), but am so thankful I am deep within the process, really in the thick of it.  I truly hope you will fall pregnant right away, but sometimes fertility treatment takes alot longer than you may think.

lynnwall23 :  I’m in the US so it might be different, but sometimes the wait list for the initial consult can take a few months if you aren’t an existing patient. From there they have to do testing which is cycle dependent and then start treatment which is also cycle dependent. We did IVF for our daughter and we want to use our frozen embryos this Aug/Sept. I called at the beginning of March for an April appointment so that we can get all the consults, testing, planning, etc done so that we can actually transfer the embryo by late summer.

I’m in Canada as well, and just got a referral to a PCOS specialist/RE on Wednesday. I was told it should take about 2 months for me to get my appointment (I’m in Saskatchewan with only a few REs in my city). We aren’t actively TTC but I’ve been recently diagnosed with PCOS and endometriosis, and we had trouble TTC our first, so my doctor was willing to give me a referral now. It would probably be faster to get in if we had been TTC for a year. I would ask for the referral at your appointment in April and hopefully you would be able to get in by September. Good luck!

If you’re in Ontario and under the age of 42 you are eligible for one OHIP funded cycle of IVF, medication is not funded (about 6k).

lynnwall23 :  I’m in Canada and the wait time to get in where I live is 6 months (I’m 34).

lifeisbeeutiful :  what city in Ontario did you seek treatment? I’m definitely tossing around the idea to travel because this process seems to take so long 🙁
