I’m a rather dark skinned girl. For shapewear I’m wondering if black or white would be the better choice. I did hear that you should ideally have your shapewear before starting dress shopping. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this please.

@SweetBug: In general or under a wedding dress?

@SpecialSundae: Under the wedding dress.
I didn’t realize how vague that sounded till you pointed it out. Thanks!

You may not need shapewear for your dress, so I wouldn’t worry about it for dress shopping.
I wear shapewear pretty much every day under my work dresses to smooth out pantylines and random bumps and lumps, but depending on the style of dress, that’s not an issue.
Also, the chances of any dress you try on actually being your size are pretty small, so you can’t really tell how the dress will fit you exactly until yours is in.
I wore control top pantyhose on my dressbuying trip (most salon require you remove your shoes at the door, and I didn’t want to wear socks, not walk around barefoot) and that was fine.
Once you pick a dress, assuming they have to order it, you’ll have a couple months to decide what, if any, shapewear you need under your dress. I was quite happy to discover that I need neither a bra, nor shapewear. I really didn’t want to come into my hotel room on my wedding night and show my brand new husband my oh-so-sexy Spanx!

@SeaSalt: That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

I bought my dress from David’s and when it was time for me to start trying on dresses, they let me borrow all the shape wear so I can get a real idea of what it would look like. Granted, I’m bargain shopping for all the stuff I need (crinoline, long line bra, etc.), but during try on time, they supplied everything including the shoes.
I just finished buying the under stuff today
