12 so that you always have a few extras in case some are dirty or break or you have more than 8 people over.  8 get used VERY quickly and you will be doing a lot of dish washing.  We have 16 actually,

For fine china and crystal, we also registered for 12 in case of larger parties and breakage.

I registered for sets of 12 of my everyday china, flatware, and stemware.  I have 16 of my fine china and silver but they were my grandmothers.

I actually went for 10. I know, kind of random. Our house is way to small to seat more than 8 at our current or any future dining room. I figured that if our future permanent (i.e. childrearing) home can accomodate a bigger dining room table, I’ll shell out the cash to buy the two extra sets. But that is a good 5-7 years from now. If my patterns are discontinued, a five piece place setting on Replacements.com is significantly marked up, but not so much that I want extra stuff just sitting around never to be used.

We registered for most things in sets of 8. More would be nice, but I didn’t want to only receive china as wedding presents. Getting 8 should be easier and we can buy more later.

I did 16 of silverware… but only because ours was really reasonable priced ($100 for 8) and it comes in sets of 8.. so it was 8 or 16. For that price 16 was the obvious choice. We did 16 of regular glasses (same deal… relatively cheap and sets of 8). For stemware I did 8 red wine, 8 white wine, and 4 champagne. I’m contemplating getting 4 more champagne.

I’m really torn on dishes. If we were registering for fine china I’d only do 8…. but I think we’re going to go with everyday china so I think prob 12.
