Ya wait until you recieve the gift, especially if you have not already had your wedding.

I’d also say wait until you receive it–the sender must be aware that it’s back ordered as well. I have no idea what the official etiquette is on this, but I feel like if you haven’t received it, and the giver hasn’t said to you directly “I got you this but it’s back ordered”, there is no obligation to thank yet.

Having said that, for gifts where part was back ordered and part wasn’t, we sent our thank yous when we got the first part so they’d know it arrived safely. We had towels on our registry that were ordered in February and we didn’t get the last of the set until May (thanks Macy’s!)–we sent the thank you when we got the first shipment, and then sent an email in May thanking them again and letting them know we finally got everything.
