I’m so sorry that you had so many problems.  Is there an store that has an online division that you can register at instead of going into a store?  It sounds like that store probably isn’t a good idea since they don’t have reasonably priced items.

Wow, I would close that registry and get another one.  You’re not even registered for things you want!  As far as the “dear in headlights” reaction, I think that was because most people just create an all-encompassing wedding registry, and whatever doesn’t get bought for the shower is left over to be bought for the wedding.

If most of your guests are internet-savvy, I’d recommend one of those “ultimate registry” websites.  You can add items from lots of different stores, and your guests go online to mark when they’ve purchased an item so it comes off your registry.  It looks like you can even add your honeymoon registry to it if you want.

That sounds like a terrible time!  If closing the registry would be a problem, could you just not tell guests that you are registered there (and then go register somewhere else and tell your guests that place)?

Okay, I had the exact same experience with what I suspect is the exact same story. Say, it wouldn’t happen to rhyme with “the Hay” would it? *coughcough*

Anyway, I went to their sister store as well (Home Outfitters), and my fiance and I had much more success. Yes, it’s less convenient, but the price difference is absolutely stunning and the selection… well, let’s just say that we had the same two hour scanning experience, snapping at each other and almost breaking down at The Bay and when we went to Home Outfitters, it was like heaven’s gates opened up. We seriously loved it.

We’ve since deleted everything out of our first registry and re-registered for everything at Home Outfitters. You’re definitely not alone.

I would delete that registry immediately and go somewhere else. I was nervous about registering at first also, but we really lucked out and had a good time.  you can always ask to go around by yourselves, but definetly not at that store!!

Oh gosh, the Bay is AWFUL for their registry, I totally agree. I made my appointment to set it up, the woman spent like an hour telling us all the ways we would get completion discounts and how to return items. I have no idea why that was neccessary. We didn’t have enough time to finish up, so I came back another day with a girlfriend to finish (no appointment, I just wanted a scanner gun) and was told there were none available and I had to make an appointment. Ummm it was like 11:00 Monday morning, the store was empty. There was one other couple sitting having their appointment. I’m gonna call BS on that one. We still have our registry there, but I made another one at Home Outfitters for all my linens because there is WAY more selection and the prices are much more reasonable.

I’d highly recommend Crate and Barrel, I know there’s one in Calgary but I’m not sure how close it is to you. Their customer service has been AMAZING. They send emails when something has been discontinued. They called once to say someone wanted to buy me an item off my registry but they were out of stock and had a similar one, would that be okay instead? So. Friggin. Nice. Your guests can access the registry online (with photos of each item) and call a toll free number to purchase them and you can go pick it up (or of course if they’re in Calgary they can go buy it at the store and bring it to your shower). I’m going to go pick up our first gift today!

It’s really awful that we don’t have many options up here in Canada for our registries. I’m so jealous of the Amazon.com universal registry and other things like that 🙁

Man, the Bay is awful in general. I went there (because I have a gift card) to look for muffin pans. The only muffin pan they had was 40 dollars. Ummm, no? I’ve also had experiences of unfriendly employees there too. I had a woman “follow” me around the store for an hour once, treating me like a shoplifter. I was wearing a t-shirt, shorts with no pockets and I didn’t have a purse with me. I think they are pissed because I think they don’t have a lot of job security. A lot of the HBC stores (mostly the bay and zellers) are not doing that well at this time.

I hate the Bay, so overpriced! I would definitely register at home outfitters instead if you can 🙂 Or is there a Sears near you? They are usually a bit better priced than the Bay.

UGH – I agree about the Bay!!!!!

Not for my registry per se (I registered there BEFORE this experience) but when I went to pick out a shower gift I couldn’t find ANYTHING the bride registered for! It was soooooooo frustrated!

I second Home Outfitters. They have great selection and great prices.

I am sorry this has been so stressful for you!

@Miss Short Dress – We ended up just going online and removing everything off of the Bay. It’s still there, sitting all empty, but the fiance seems to think that we could perhaps put stuff on our list after the wedding and still get the discount. Who knows, though.

It’s really shocking that a place like that would have such a rough time with their registry. Us Alberta girls don’t have much in the way of country-wide department stores to choose from, so I was super disapointed when this didn’t pull through.
