I would second your recommendation of BBB.

We also did Replacements.com and Macy’s

Replacements.com
Pros: Able to register for hard to find, no longer being made china and crystal. Customer service is awesome.
Con: No online registry. You have to call and talk to them to set up the registry and to purchase items.

Macy’s
Pros: Great selection, lots of sales, easy returns, Star Rerwards incentive program, 3months to use registry completion discount as many times as you want and said coupon can be used on stuff that never goes on sale (such as Waterford)
Cons: Level of service definitely depends on your local store, items frequently get discontinued

REI

Pros: awesome stuff that you can’t find anywhere else, gives guests an option to buy non-kitchen items (this was a huge bonus for my FH), great incentives program (you even get dividends on registry purchases), easy returns if you are a member ($20 lifetime membership fee), free shipping over $75, AMAZING customer service (the people who work there are super knowledgable about their products, too!), good sales

Cons: stores can be hard to come by in certain areas of the country, the in-store registry process is not that awesome (the guns are hard to operate, you can’t tell whether something went onto your registry with the gun – ours missed lots of stuff), returns are hard without a receipt

What we used it for:  camping supplies (including chairs, lanterns, a new tent, etc.)

Crate and Barrel

Pros:  Tons of fun, hip, reasonably priced housing options, completion discount that can be used for big buys like furniture, easy returns, stores everywhere, good online product reviews, easy online registry set-up and shopping, they have EVERYTHING(cheese slate? door mat? fine china? obscure kitchen tool?), lots of sales

Cons:  stores can be really crowded on weekends, staff is often frantic and not super helpful, THEY NO LONGER GIVE CASH BACK ON RETURNS, stuff can be seasonal and sell out quickly – making it hard to complete items you register for, it’s super popular so it can be hard to find really unique items

What we used it for:  smaller appliances, fun cocktail accessories, glasses, everyday table linens, cookbooks

Bloomingdale’s

Pros:  The customer service is AMAZING!  (seriously, they treat you like a celebrity every single time you go in (to register, to make returns, etc.), call you when things on your registry go on sale or are about to run out, feed and caffeinate you, spend hours explaining the difference between two knives, let you set up a full table so you can see how things go together), good sales, they only stock the good stuff, nice 12-month completion discount, online system is easy to use

Cons:  they only have the good stuff (so it can be expensive), stores are hard to come by, they do discontinue stuff

What we used it for:  fine china, pots and pans, Le Cruseut, baking dishes and pans, flatware, formal table linens, knives, crystal barware

A word to the wise about Williams-Sonoma – they do NOT do returns without a receipt.  End of story.  This has been extremely frustrating for us as we received three of the same W-S item (that we did not register for), and had to resort to tears to get store credit.

A big pro for Amazon is being able to read hundreds of reviews before registering for an item. Also, Fiance hates shopping and registering by myself sounded so depressing. I love the universal registry and we’ve had several people buy items off of it.

Bed Bath and Beyond:

Pro’s:

Easy registry, very nice and helpful SA’s, large selection, many stores

Con’s:

Limited selection of fine china

William Sonoma-

I had such a bad experience I cancelled this one. Extremely poor service over the phone, Every person i spoke to had different information. Registry has many “quirks” which made registering for many items difficult, especially those from WS Home. I have also had problems with their gift cards in the past.

Crate and Barrel

large selection of items, easy to register online and instore, helpful SA’s although less helpful when the store is busy, good price point, can link to myregistry.com

con:

limited selection of brand items

limited bath, bedding and fine china

Michael C Fina

I have not registered yet but probably will. For high end china, crystal and silver their selection is almost unbeatable. I have called several times and their service on the phone has been great.

Cons:

storefront only in NYC
