My SO and I are currently designing my dream ring!! (The excitement is real lol) I know I want a halo cushion cut ring but I’m really undecided on buying a typical mined diamond or going with a lab created one. The cost would be more by a whole $4k if we choose the mined diamond. I like to think I’m a reasonable person and don’t feel like going lab created is really an issue to me, but I need to hear from other bees! What did you choose and why? Would you have chosen differently if you chose the rings today?

allthatglitters14 : Not exactly the same, but I went with a lab ruby over a mined stone. The choice was so easy – why would I pay more money for something that is worse for the environment? My ruby is perfect and sparkly and didn’t have to be mined. Win-win.
Good luck deciding what’s best for you, and congrats on designing your dream ring! How exciting!

allthatglitters14 : I have a mined diamond, I hadn’t really thought about lab created but I’ve always been drawn to the fact it came from the earth. If you aren’t drawn to that, get a lab for sure!! Why spend more??? Good luck!!

I have a lab diamond and it was SO worth it in my opinion. We saved thousands and it looks just as beautiful as a mined diamond. Unless you’re planning to resell or trade in our your diamond for an upgrade one day, then its a fantastic choice. My choice wasnt really for ethical reasons but thats obviously a big plus as well.

Lab diamond here! We originally planned on using an antique cut mined diamond that is an heirloom of mine–when we decided against that we moved to moissanite, and then ended up at lab created diamonds. The cost was obviously a huge factor for us, and I know this can be a controversial POV, but ultimately I feel good knowing that no one suffered or was treated unfairly in order for me to wear this piece of jewelry that symbolizes love and commitment. I just don’t understand paying a premium for something identical, both scientifically and in appearance, just because someone went into a mine and dug it out for you. But that’s just one persons opinion.

Lab diamond all the way! They have exactly the same composition and properties as mined, only cheaper and a lot more ethical.
Me and my boyfriend watched an episode of “Explained” on Netflix about diamonds, I really recommend it! He wasn’t sure about the lab diamonds but that episode was very helpful

I have a mined diamond but I’ve had my ring for about 7-8 years so I did not know anything about lab diamonds at that time. If I had the chance to do it over today I would go lab 100%…I would get more bang for our buck! Lol! It did go the custom route on my setting though so I know the excitement of taking that picture perfect idea in your head and watching it be created. Congrats and I hope you make the right decision for you and feel confident in your choice! Here’s a pic of my ring:

I have a mined diamond. Yes the composition of a lab diamond is the exact same but I just feel like a mined diamond is more natural. I dunno, it’s probably dumb but it’s just how I feel. We went to a diamond wholesaler so the prices were a lot less than retail.
I wouldn’t choose any different if I got to choose again today.
I personally don’t think there’s a lot of logic behind choosing a ring / stone. If you love it, and your heart calls for it, you should get it. A lot of times people reason themselves into choosing a particular stone, but then regret it later because it isn’t what their heart desired. Choose the one that makes you happy, regardless of the scientific / environmental / cost reasons behind it.

I just got my ring from James Allen yesterday and I was hesitant but went with a lab diamond. It is beautiful and the cost was significantly less. I was able to get a 1.76 carat F color vs1 diamond for $5000. It would have been $14000 for a natural mined diamond that literally looks and is the exact same. I also noticed on James Allen that the quality of the lab grown diamonds were better compared to the same grading of the mined one. The vs1 mined diamonds looked like a sI 2 of the lab grown. Not sure why this is because you’d think it would be the same amount of inclusions for the clarity scale. Maybe they have stricter standards on lab grown since they have less inclusions generally speaking. For a different reason I went to a very well known high end jeweler yesterday to have a piece of jewelry repaired and she noticed my ring. She looked at it under the loop and was complementing on how high quality and clean the stone is. I told her it was lab grown and I asked if she could tell. She said it would test as a diamond and the only way she would know if it’s lab grown would be to look at the number inscribed on the diamond with a microscope then she’d have to look that number up on the computer. If I ever upgrade in the future I would definitely go with another lab grown one.

I am hoping to get an August Vintage stone for my next diamond and would love to go lab created but they don’t make them In the lower colour range just now.
My dream stone is between an L-R and lab diamonds tend to be much higher than that, so I’ll be looking at earth diamonds purely for that reason.

Scientifically they should be exactly the same.

I went with a lab diamond and I love it! I don’t plan on reselling ever though.

I went with mined diamond. I actually wouldn’t mind to have lab created, but FH does. He still kinda old school who thinks stones that are made in the lab aren’t real. He also thinks sooner everyone will have lab and our stone will be no different. I’m saying this so you know your SO has to agree that the fact that it’s lab created too. Did you already ask him if he’s ok that your e-ring stone will be lab created.

Not a diamond desirer, but if I were it’d be lab created all the way. I love the mind-clean aspect and could get way more for my money.
