As if I’m not already under pressure when I have to get my dress this weekend, my cousin is wanting me to pick out a Korean hanbok that she wants to gift me for the wedding, and I like the idea of wearing it to the rehearsal dinner in honor of my mom (my mom bought one for her to wear to my wedding, but passed away before she had the chance…my family thinks it’s bad luck for me to wear it…silly superstitions). We’re not having a separate Korean ceremony as it feels pointless now with only a couple cousins left in the family, but I like the idea of incorporating my other culture somehow. π
A very generous, thoughtful gift. But she needs my measurements asap. -_-
I’m going with a very nontraditional approach to a hanbok and found some really cute cocktail dresses that still maintain the feel of more traditional gowns. I’m really leaning towards the black and red one, but the other ones are adorable too! Opinions? Suggestions?
I’m petite and a brunette with long hair. Not sure this helps…

Wow, I even kill my own threads, hehe. I do appreciate the poll responses though!
The last one would make really cute bridesmaid dresses but they’re a bit out of budget, sadly.

I really like the first dress. I think the colors would work well with your hair color and complexion. I also think the length of the dress would work well on a shorter gal.

My vote was for the last dress because it says spring and would look awesome with your long hair.

I like them all but if I had to choose I would pick the first one. So, what are these dresses? They are really neat!

I had a feeling the red/black would be near the top. I love the pink and blue one too..very, very different.
@jerrbear585: They’re modern versions of Korean gowns called hanbok. π
This is pretty traditional:

I think it’s really cool that you are incorporating your culture into your modern wedding. I wish I had some culture. Well, I’m sure I do being fillipino mix, but I wasn’t raised with it. Props to you! How does your cousin feel about using the modern version of the hanbok?

All of these dresses are gorgeous. My vote is for the first or last.

@jerrbear585: My cousin is actually encouraging it! She knows I’m not a very traditional girl and would feel out of place in something not my style. π
My best friend married a Filipino and wore a bolero made out of pineapple fibers to incorporate his culture. It was really beautiful. π
@Sschaf: They really are! I love that they’re so wearable for any cocktail event π

I love the red and black one and last one but I voted for the red and black one.

The first or last one. The first one is sexier and the last one is more romantic, in my opinion anyways.

These are fun. Pretty different from the traditional dress but I like the update.
You probably know this but Korean wedding dresses are usually bright and colorful, while the older ladies wear pastel colors.
I think the blue one would look gorgeous with your coloring but I think #1 or #4 seem more wedding-like. They’re all really pretty.
If you’re interested, another thing they sometimes have at weddings are a pair of ducks. See korean-arts.com for their wedding favors or search “korean wedding ducks”. I guess ducks mate for life so they’re considered a good symbol for a couple. Another thing that’s sometimes done is the groom carries the bride. Not that I’m suggesting this but it’s just a funny thing. There’s a pic in this Sunday’s NY Times Wedding section of a non-korean groom carrying his korean bride.

@hunni b: Hehe, I witnessed that at a cousin’s wedding! It was too funny.
I have never been to that site. Thank you SO much!!! I’m really loving the favors here. Funny that you mentioned the ducks because I inherited a pair from my mom but I never knew they were so symbolic. I really like the idea.
