I’m planning on the same thing because of distance. My sister did this as well because of distance and there wasn’t a problem at all! In fact it was so much easier having it intown!  As long as you know where your walking from and the settup of the ceremony theres really no reason why you need to do it at the venue you are having the wedding at.

We made the choice to have the ceremony rehearsal in my FIL’s backyard as we’re going to have the rehearsal dinner there (the ceremony will be on a beach in the neighboring town). I don’t think it makes much difference given the type of ceremony we’ll have (and it’s not like the equipment (chairs, speakers, etc.) will have been set up on the beach on Friday night anyway for the Saturday ceremony), and it makes rehearsal logistics much, much easier for us. So…. fingers crossed. The important part is timing, everyone knowing their lines and or at least the order of things, and working out kinks, and we’ll be able to do all of that at the alternative venue. It’s not the best possible situation, but I think it’ll be sufficient.

To have the rehearsal at our ceremony space it’s an extra $500 and there’s no good place within an hour to have the dinner (getting married in an open air chapel on top of a mountain) so we decided to have the rehearsal and dinner in our backyard! We’re going to have a welcome party after the dinner, too because we have so many out of town guests and this way we might get to see them more than at the wedding

Wow, they charge extra to rehearse at your venue. That is crazy. I would just do it in the church. Asl long as you get the processional and recessional down so people know when to walk and where to stand, etc you should be fine.
