I know that a lot of my friends did their counseling through their church, but since I don’t belong to a church that isn’t very useful. I would like Fiance and I to participate in couple’s counseling so we can get everything in order before we get married. I’ve looked online and there seems to be really shady sights that I don’t necessarily trust and a lot are very expensive. I could look in my insurance plan, but I’m not looking for someone who is a licensed therapist, I’m looking for someone that specializes in couple’s counseling and that isn’t a category on BCBS’s website.
Has anyone done pre-marital couple’s counseling? Was it helpful? How did you find the person and how many times did you go?
Does anyone know of a website that will help me find a good counselor?

@ananeele:Anyone who advertises or charges money for counseling services has to be a licensed counselor or therapist. Would you go see a doctor who was unlicensed? A licensed counselor or therapist is going to have spent years training and learning and practicing how best to help you learn to solve your own issues. They shouldn’t psychoanalyze you or diagnose you–the most that they should do is recommend individual therapy with another counselor if they feel the need to.
Look for someone who specializes in Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy. That’s going to be your couple’s counselor. You should be able to find them on BCBS (look for MFT or MFC or LMFT)–if not, find places with larg numbers of therapists and call them up and ask if anyone there does Marriage and Family counseling.

Thanks! I appreciate you giving me all the licensure abbreviations. I meant I wasn’t looking for just a licensed counselor to go to but a specialist in those things. Very helpful!
